The suicides of three detainees at the US base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, amount to acts of war, the US military says.

The camp commander said the two Saudis and a Yemeni were "committed" and had killed themselves in "an act of asymmetric warfare waged against us".

So suicide (not murderous suicide, as with suicide bombings) is an act of war now?

So why don't they allow an independent enquiry to establish whether the deaths were an act of desperation or an act of war?

Well if all extremis could take after them and run up to people and slash their own wrists we'd be on easy street.

Yeah, they're so heartless. Fighting against you when you arrest them for dubious reasons and hold them for months/years without a charge. Bastards.

Hey, how about you actually read up on Guantanamo before saying something like this again.

Hm, actually, thinking about it, it could be asymmetrical warfare... hadn;t thought about it that way yet.

If I ever meet this Coleen Graffy, I will punch her in the face. Suicide is not a ****ing PR move, it's called "the only way out" when you're faced with such conditions. Grr, angry. And this is appenig in a prison where none of the inmates are actually tried by a fair court...

Guatamano Bay is the US's way of getting Human Rights and Freedom, making them into toilet tissues wiping their ass with it, and then pissing on it.

It's a damn disgrace, eveyone taking part in running that place should be shot.

If I'd been captured and then locked up for years without trial or any form of contact with the outside world, I think I would commit suicide.

ANGRY

Dammit, Amnesty International just arn't ****ing violent enough.
They have ****ing children there FFS.

The US military has admitted that children aged 16 years and younger are among the detainees being interrogated at its prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Otherwise known as the Bolsheviks, lol!

It's not inconceivable that it's actually a political move - on purpose - because it's already been demonstrated that there are people who are prepared to kill themselves for a cause and it's surely likely there are at least a few in Guantanamo out of the hundreds of prisoners. It's just I find it quite disgusting how the military seem to think they have the right to be outraged or offended or anything other than ashamed.

Well, no shit sherlock.

there's children in there ffs.
I could give a rats ass about age. There's a reason they are there in the first place. They are or will be threats to national security.

French Ninja, considering that none of these people were tried with any crime and that many have been proven innocent and released when pressed about it, do you seriously think there's a good reason all of them are in there?

Theres been like 50 threads over the last year explaining why thats not true

In which case...why have most of them never been charged with any offense whatosever?

I was under the impression that, once people were arrested, they were charged, brought to trial, and either convicted or acquitted. I was also under the impression that 'threats to national security' should be properly investigated:

Wikipedia said:
A report based on data supplied by the Defense Department showed that 86% of the prisoners were handed over by Afghan and other local bounty-hunters rather than as the result of any American investigation or collection of intelligence. (source)

EDIT:
CBC said:
The United States is holding 460 prisoners at Guantanamo. None of the detainees have ever been charged with offences by the military, let alone convicted.

CBC 29th May 2006

The numbers of those charged seem to vary - I assume along with the numbers of prisoners - but it's never very high by any report.

You got the "will be" part right if they ever get out.

I think I'd be if you locked me away, tortured me, deprived me and then let me go without any kind of compensation or evidence to support why they did in the first place.

Going by sulk's figures, that's a total of:

396 PEOPLE WHO AREN'T ACTUALLY TERRORISTS IMPRISONED INDEFINITELY, WITHOUT TRIAL, BY THE UNITED STATES.

I think that's worth caps.

Oh, and if anyone says "but they're suspected terrorists though" I will imprison you in my garage on charges of suspected child rape.

He said extremists not guantanamo bay inmates. How about you actually read his post before saying something like this again.

As to the suicides, America should probably realise that holding forein nationals without charge for extended periods is also an act of war.

America, be warned you are running out of friends rapidly. Blair will be gone soon, and the damn liberals are going to vote in some flower picking peace puppet, who won't be allowed to play with you any more.

Incidentally, next time you lock up a british national without trial, I am going to come over there and poke you in the eye with a fork.

Werent most of the inmates simply people fighting in Afghanistan?
It is indeed strange the camp is not in the US......

Shut down the camp and trial each person involved in Den Haag for crimes against humanity..

His post clearly implied that the inmates of Guantanamo were extremists.

Wouldn't that kind of defeat the point of what Amnesty is all about?

Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case, lol.

Is innocent until proven guilty still the standard?

One of them was due to be released, but didn't know it:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/5070514.stm

Mark Denbeaux, who represents some of the foreign detainees said the man was among 141 prisoners due to be released.

He said the prisoner was not told because US officials had not decided which country he would be sent to.

This quote made me giggle:

"What I would say is that we are always concerned when someone takes his own life, because as Americans we value life even if it is the life of a violent terrorist captured waging war against our country."

that quote is ****ing hypocrital bullshit:

"Amnesty International describes cases of torture and other violations where punishments do not appear to have been commensurate to the gravity of the offence, as required under Article 4(2). They include the case of an army private sentenced to 3 years for shooting an unarmed Iraqi detainee, who was handcuffed, in the back of the head. The soldier, who had allegedly said earlier that he wanted to kill an Iraqi, was charged with premeditated murder, which carries a potential life sentence, but the court-martial panel of soldiers reduced this to involuntary manslaughter."

http://web.amnesty.org/library/index/engamr510612006

"Recent news accounts have detailed the deaths of two detainees in 2002 at the Bagram Collection Point in Afghanistan during interrogation by military intelligence. One man was hung by his arms in his jail cell for days and beaten so severely in the legs that he died, even though, as the newspapers reported, soldiers involved in the detention believed that the man was innocent.

Despite being ruled homicide by the coroners, the deaths were described by a military spokesman as resulting from natural causes.
"

"In one case, a Guantanamo Bay prisoner told a military panel that American soldiers had beaten him so badly, he now wets his pants."

http://www.house.gov/georgemiller/statement62105b.html

"And there were more than 70 such deaths (suspicious deaths of prisoners under US interrogation) - questionable deaths - of detainees under US supervision when I left the state department and I have people who are now telling me that the death toll was up to around 90"

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4481092.stm

Solaris: Amnesty international is the ONLY organization confronting the US on human rights abuses ..it's taken almost 3 years for the UN to follow suit and what's worse is that allied nations are turning a blind eye

UnNews:US authorities mobilise response to new "suicide warfare"

11 June 2006

"I believe this was not an act of desperation, but an act of warfare waged against us. "

~ Rear Adm Harry 'Harrison' Harris, camp commander

Troops were rushed into Guantanamo Bay today to control the damage as three prisoners who had previously been thought secure defied guards, committing a new and dangerous form of terrorism despite their secure surroundings.

In this cunning and underhanded act of warfare dubbed by leading counterterrorist experts as "suicide", the terrorist takes not the life of an innocent, but his own.

"Suicide", says camp commander Rear Admiral Harry 'Harrison' Harris, "is a subtle and underhanded means of assault. It may help to understand it if you think of it as like a suicide bombing, but without the explosion."

The potential dangers from this violent and terrible act are apparent: the terrorist's corpse may fall heavily onto those nearby, causing bruising or some slight scratches. If not dealt with quickly, the corpse may begin to rot and spread disease, especially if it is allowed to fall into a supply of drinking water. If the suicidee is infected with "The Disease", those splashed with his blood may be turned into filthy homosexuals. Furthermore, by desecrating the Lord's temple the suicidee guarantees himself a position in Hell, thus evading the forces of caucasian heterosexual Christian Republican Americans aged over 25 who would otherwise apprehend him in Heaven.

Fortunately, the damage done by today's suicide attack was minimal and quickly dealt with; while three soldiers were killed by friendly fire and one building levelled during the operation, the former terrorists have now been safely contained and will be transported to a holding area to be interrogated and executed.

"There is no reason for these three individuals to have committed suicide." says Rear Admiral Harris. "We have done our absolute best to ensure their comfort and happiness while they were awaiting their turn in the machine. Even when they - for some reason - stopped enjoying their meals we did the honest, Christian thing to do and forced food into their stomachs until they got the idea again."

It is in response to this new and unanticipated threat that Congress is rushing in new laws to prevent further attacks of suicide. Police officers have been authorised to use maximum force to stop anybody who seems on the verge of suicide, and legislation is underway to enforce the death penalty on anybody suspected of suicidal tendencies.

"At the end of the day," said President George Bush in an announcement today, "suicide is a dirty and despicable business. And besides, killing your own men is our job."

UnCyclopedia ftw.

First there was Original Jesus, then Jesus, then Jesus Christ, then Ted Jesus Christ God, Cyborg Jesus and even Supply-side Jesus. There were lots of men, as well as a few women, named Jesus. Only something was not quite right. God was upset that evil still existed and that Oprah controlled Atheism, Islam, Sciencetology, Paganism, Nihilism, Racism, Sexism, Terrorism and crumbs. God's plan was to create a superteam of Jesii, but not everyone could agree on what this team would be. Suggestions ranged from rough and ready gunslingers to totally sweet ninjas.

To end the infighting, God consulted with the Viking God Loki. Loki designed five robotic lions that could join together to form Ultra Jesus. God picked five people to give the keys to these lions for times when Ultra Jesus was needed.

The five people who hold the keys to the lions are:

* George W. Bush the Black Ranger.
* Bill Gates the Green Ranger.(Steve Ballmer was orignally chosen, but was fired for threatening to ****ing Kill™ God.)
* Jerry Falwell the Blue Ranger.
* Britney Spears the Pink Ranger.
* Margaret Thatcher the Red Ranger.

Notibly absent is the Yellow Key which was in the possesion of the Dark Lord Sauron until it was stolen by Sub-Zero during World War I. Sub-Zero presented it as a Festivus gift to renowned professional golfer Kim Jong-Il and it lies somewhere in the Country Club of Pyongyang to this day.

Before Terri died, the Ultra Jesus Rangers had taken on monsters like:

* Chuck Norris
* Bill Oddy
* The Legendary White Teletubby
* Andy Milonakis
* Graham Norton
* Harry Potter's 3 inch trout
* Galon man
* Captain Cock
* Mecha Hussein

* the Fantastic Four
* The Incredible Hulk
* Super Wilde
* That vegetable with the stinky wazzock
* Mecha Buddha
* Your Mum
* Rolf Harris' Mum
* Spongebob
* Mr. Cuddles

* Master Chief
* That guy from Can't Cook, Won't Cook
* Samus
* Osama Bin
* Good Charlotte
* Bob C. Cock
* Captain Beefheart

There is only one monster that can defeat Ultra Jesus- Aunt Jemima. Aunt Jemima is the arch-enemy of Ultra Jesus. She is, contrary to popular belief, capable of drowning in syrup. This is her only weakness. However, since Aunt Jemima syrup kicks too much ass for public viewing, Ultra Jesus never actually fights Aunt Jemima.

I'm sure history has probably heard that exact argument once before, I believe it may have been around the time of the first comcentration camps, not sure though!

This was the sickest comment on Guantanamo Bay prisoners:

the Pentagon says the detainees are not prisoners of war (POWs) protected by the Geneva Conventions and describes them as "unlawful combatants" instead.

but they're not (even though the geneva conventions still protects them somewhat) ...the US has always called them "unlawful combatants" ...in fact they did so before the invasion (at least 1 year prior) ..even as to go so far as to have a legal team look into how torture applies to them

Wow, I wonder if these suicides would have been called an "act of asymetrical warfare" if the men had just shot themselves when we invaded Afghanistan or maybe perhaps if they just killed themsleves in their apartments or houses before being picked up on whatever charges they were dealt. I seriously doubt it.

Plus, these guys were starving themselves for quite some time now and were being forcefed by the guards--I can't imagine wanting to live in such conditions (and they were almost assuredly a lot worse). And I think that most of the inmates down there have at least considered suicide as an option if not tried it in earnest previous to this.

I really don't see this as any sort of act of war. Its just a sad commentary on the state of humanity at this point in history...;(

How could it be an act of war

Definition:
-the waging of armed conflict against an enemy; "thousands of people were killed in the war"
-or is any conflict involving the organized use of arms and physical force between countries or other large-scale armed groups. Warfare is the conduct of war.
