Greetings all,
I know that Vista is right around the corner for everyone to buy, but for those of you that are still (shudders) using an older non-WinXP OS, then the below info is for you.
Did you know that if you purchase the WinXP "Upgrade" CD that you are infact buying the FULL version of WinXP?
Did you know the ONLY difference between a "Retail" & "Upgrade" version of WinXP is that the "Retail" version can be popped into your CD-ROM drive & installed without any earlier OS installed & whereas with the "Upgrade" version you must have at least a Win95 CD, which WinXP will ask to be inserted into the CD-ROM drive before WinXP is installed. This is ONLY to verify that an earlier version of Windows "Is/Was" installed or is available.
Did you know that when WinXP asks for the Win95, Win98, 98SE, WinNT, WinME or Win2k CD, that it's in fact ONLY doing a CD check, like on a game. No files are installed. Pick up an old Windows CD at a yard sale somewhere for $5, then buy the WinXP "Upgrade" version instead of the "Retail" version & you'll save yourself a whole lot of cash.
Don't believe me? The next time you format your HDD & go to install WinXP, pay close attention & you'll see what I mean. I always thought you HAD to have an earlier version of Windows installed. Nope. So before I went & posted this here, I searched a bit online & also looked through an old issue of "Maximum PC" which just so happened to have an article about just what I posted. Not to mention that I am always nuking my PC for one reason or another & have "Tried" what I have posted above.
Just some things to think about.....
Hope it helps....
