/** just made this post on some other forums, i will update it with more games and so on when i can (going to test hl2, d3, q4, aoe3 and so on when i can get my sata drives working :x) **/

think directx9 performance is going to take a hit in vista ? think again.

installed guild wars on vista.

performance ? basically exactly the same as xp (though! because the display drivers are very basic, when i turn on max aa ingame, it runs fine except characters 'move funny') -- you heard me right. going to test some other games soon.

yes, that thumbnail preview of gw in the start menu is LIVE with 0 delay and i have 0 performance hit when i hover over it. i did test this in fullscreen (1280x1024), i just went to window to test the live preview. i'll try windows switcher too, see if it's also a live. preview

Thats good news then i suppose :) I plan on getting Vista no matter what, but i hope any problems that relate with Vista and current games does get sorted :(

You should run a fraps benchmark of the intro scene or something else to give us an idea of the actual real performance.

destrukt, the thing is not games taking a performance hit on Vista, but rather on DX10, and you don't have DX10+working DX10 card, do you?
Then this "test" is pointless in that aspect, because what the general gaming population seem to be worried about is the performance hit of running DX9- games under DX10.
Very nice screen none-the-less tho <3

In my past experience directX has only improved performance.

But hearing a lot of things about DX10, I know why gamers are feeling anxious. Microsoft has made DX10 such a big deal for graphics that I am blatantly worried myself. But remember what I have said about performance getting better, I think that we are all getting worried over nothing

Dx10 will emulate Dx9 and lower but so far according to microsoft the performance decreases have been about 1% - 2% or in other words if your getting 100FPS you may end up having 99.98.
Wow......that'll totally **** you up when ur playing ur games!

Minerel, calm down mate.
I myself am not worried after having read the most recent reports about that, but however, gamers seem to have misintercepted it as DX9 games running 50% slower or something xD
That's why we need benchies for them to proove that this is not the case..

this thread is just to stop people complaining and being scared about performance drops with directx9 games in vista, i feel i have semi-achieved that (until i test more games & do a 'real' test as nutcrackr suggested). some major tech site will probably beat me and do a 'real' test with some nice setup, no fame for me. : (

i know what you're trying to say though, but i can't ever remember having problems going through new directx versions (i can only really remember from 7 to 9 and i don't have much experience with 10, except for messing around with some developer tools).

Thing is, the step from DX10 is like 10 times bigger than it has been between DX9 and the previous generations, why?
Because they've rewritten pretty much the entire API afaik, that means that instead of being a "upgrade", it's a new one, in it's own right.
I mean, MS aim to streamline GPU differences and production via DX10, making it so that devs have to worry less about performance differences in different vendors and between nVidia and ATI etc.

after reading this, am i worried ? heck no, it looks like it will be anything but bad.

As far as developers are concerned, they should finally be able to simply write to the API and know that any DX10 compliant card will produce the correct result.
developers worried ? nope (well, we need one to make an opinion ;)); well, they may need to learn some new tricks with the dx10 api, but it doesn't sound horrifying at all.

no opengl yet, i'll try some hl1 based games later.

hl2 runs very well compared to xp (so about the same i would say), with these horrible drivers.

Guild Wars worked on build 5129. The one before, too. I also had tested Steam.

DX9.L will ensure that DX9 games on DX10 hardware will run just fine.

Didn't Microsoft limit OpenGL on Vista to only working at half potential?
Yey for half-year old news. We dont know if they've changed that yet or not.

The OpenGL thing was just because AN EARLY BETA OF VISTA WRAPPED OPEN GL with DX making it slower. Thats all, and everyone got pissed.
