There is a new game coming out called Guild Wars. It's a MMORPG where, and this is a first, it doesn't charge you a monthly fee to play. It looks cool, and I heard it was going to be pretty good, but you can max out your character in little time, and looks like there aren't many different characters to choose.

I'm a big fan of MMORPG's. What are your opinions? Is anyone looking forward to this game? Of course I don't want to buy it if any MMORPG fan thinks it sux.

Take a look at these screen shots especially the 2nd one. Tell me these aren't the best environment graphics you've ever seen.

Go check out the Oblivion forum. lol.

Guild Wars looks great. I played it every beta event(Onsept the current one).

We all pretty much know about Guild Wars here..

and this is a first, it doesn't charge you a monthly fee to play.
Not a First. A first for a retail game. Though not a first.

It plays heaven like. Real nice interferance.

I just hate the armor things. Because it's overall the same basic armor for everyone....really really bugs me.

If they added alot more variety in armor for all the classes, then sure. But otherwize you don't really see to many diffrent looking people.

So yes, I've played the preview events. It was fun and looked great. They just need to make alot more types of armors so people actually look diffrent.

I wanted to clear the part up:

I heard you can max your character in little time, though I don't know

If you go into this thinking it's an MMORPG like World of Warcraft or Everquest, you will only be disappointed. If it was anything like them they would need to charge a monthly fee.

what's so different about it?!?!?!?!?!

in the beta, there were a lot of people aroundme, it didn't seem any different than a normal mmorpg.

In a MMORPG people are around in towns, quests, when your out gaining experince, etc.. You will see anyone that is in the same place you are.

In guild wars only in towns and where you go to start a quest are there people around you. In Guild Wars if you go to get some experince you will only see yourself and those who you have partied with.

I don't feel like explaining it..

FAQ at www.guildwars.com:

Is Guild Wars an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)?

Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences.

Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, kill stealing, and lines to complete a quest.

Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. But Guild Wars eliminates much of the tedium of traveling through the world. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they've previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map.

Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-on-guild warfare or the international tournament. But engaging in combat is always the player's choice; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.

Finally, unlike existing MMOs, all characters in Guild Wars inhabit the same virtual world -- they are not divided onto different servers or shards -- so players can always team up with or compete against any other player in the world.

Oh yeah and it kick ass.

I wish I could play the beta event and I don't want to preorder it if I haven't played it.

That actually puts me off, it takes away the whole point of MMORPGS and turns it into a regular co-op game

Again, that kinda defeats the point to a large game world entirely. And I'm sure it'll end up being used to cheat with too :(

Heh apart from the whole quest thing that is divided up from the rest of the game.

Guild Wars looks pretty, I wont argue that, but yeah, not seen an MMORPG yet thats really any good. WoW comes damn close though from all the stories I keep hearing about it.

I think Guildwars problems that you put forward TDE, can be forgiven since you don't pay a monthly fee, unlike most other massively multiplayer games.

I have the pre-order of Guildwars, spend ten bucks on it,only problem is that the thing has a connection error......

Did you not get into the last phase WoW beta??!

It's not that it's necessarily any different from other MMORPG's, it just does all the things 10x better.

So what, from what I have experienced in wow and from what I read at the wow forums, a lot of people are soloing a lot of the time, cause one has allredy done the quest teh other has t odo yet, it is really hard to regulate unless you play with nearby friend, and when you are questing in a group you mostly play with around 4 or 5 people, it's when you come to town where there are a lot of folks with whom you can trade and wheree you need a lot of people.

In GW from the first missions you are allredy playing in a team, casue it is nececarry and it is very easy to form a group unliek in other mmo's, the game is immidietly exiciting to play from the first moment, no long and boring stuff, it may keep you less occupied than other mmo's but in that tiem period you'll do a lot more stuff, ot has great story with good missionss, unliek the wow's colllect this and that, with hardly any story, and where it takes you liek hours to do a simply and stupid job. Plus in guild war it's all on one server ,so when you go in town or wanna trade, you have the whole community at your disposal and not only the 10000 or so on that server, so trading is a lot easier, and the pvp is totally unmatced by any mmo's it is very exiting, very competitive and no lag, I have had massive fights in GW that would totally lag in mmo's. So basicly gw a lot of good stuff from mmo's and discards a lot of bad stuff, enough for me for to compensate for the lack of raids possiblilties or an open world and the exploration of it.

I like walking around and seeing people wander in WoW, I like helping them, healing them and stuff. And when you have a difficult quest, you go to the area and ask a player to join your party. It's stupid to have no people walking around. I like wandering around myself, running into some friends and then teaming up.

And that monthly fee is justified, I've played for MANY hours already, for just €12,50 a month (actually, still in the free month). Nothing compared to other subscriptions I have. It's not much money compared to what you get in return.

I remember playing some GW, and I didn't even know it was an online game until I read it later, it's silly to have no people walking around. Felt like a graphically beefed up Diablo. Not like a massive multiplayer game.

That says more about you than it does about GW.
BTW, yes wow keeps you occupied for a long time, but it does that by streching things out unnececairly, it's like dragonballz, yes it has a lot of episodes bu twhen one fight is 11 episodes long then not much happens. I count the lengt of games by how much intersting things you havew to do, so lets take hl2 for example, every damm minut of playing that game you are figuring things out, every minut there is another challenge, in wow, you pretty much do in 1 hour as much as you do in one minut of hl2. GW on the other hand maybe linear and shorter, but it's exciting from moment one.

can you have people do the Irish Jig, disco, headbang, and breakdance in WoW?

Probabaly, in wow every race and gender have a different dance, like my male nightelf danced like michael jackson, male dwarf like the russion dance, female human did the macarena, for the rest I don't know.

Oh poo...I missed the weekend event :|, no point trying to get a key now :p

It was only for the people who preorderd the game, so if haven't, there is nothing to feel sorry for yourself, and if you did then you are bad man, go stand in the corner.

lol , nah, I did'nt preorder it :x , any idea when the next public weekend event is ? :O

it wasnt just for people who preordered, there were sites giving away keys

actually no, fileplanet was giving away keys, no contest required. Some other sites were doing the same but it was very limited. Anyways, lets not get into an argument about this

There is one reason, and one reason only, that I dislike Guild wars (and every other MMO, regardless of a montly fee or not)... And that is WoW. Admittedly I haven't played Guild wars, but the general feeling I get from the screenshots and the videos is that it isn't a welcoming world. While the enviroments look realistic, this also makes them look cold and bland. In guild wars a dungeon just looks like a ruined castle, and a open field just looks like any open field I can see in the countryside. But WoW... in WoW you can explore a vid landscape, littered with vibrant ruins that have been wonderfully sculpted, rather than simply stumble across "Generic_Ruicned_castle_32".

Admittedly the graphics in Guild Wars look spectacular for an MMO, but means nothing if the quests and economy are bland. So can someone tell me what the quests are like in guild wars, possibly the items as well?

Well, the only thing i can recommend is that you play Guild Wars for yourself. The landscapes are far from what you describe them as and the gameplay is very very fluid. In Guild Wars im sure you can explore vast lands littered with various ruins as well, there are areas outside the main city that you can explore.

Guild Wars is awesome. Balanced, fun gameplay, and very difficult to look like. You should play the game, the art is very comparable to WoW.

Yes you indeed can explore the lands but you can only do it in a small group or alone, there s way to just go and explore without going on a mission, only thing is I think you won't find much intersting things there, no cities or that, and you won't come across other players, the game is very linear, I think you wouldn't even enjoy it half as much as WoW.

It looks something like Fable (xbox)
Fable is single player offline only
Fable is a fantastic game
The fact that you can play it online massively multiplayer with no monthly fee is bonus!

I think I'll buy it.

I think you can actually walk to other cities. However im not sure of this yet, i only was able to play the BWE for about 2 hours, does anyone know of this? Im sure you will find this equaly as fun as WoW if not more. If your a hardcore mmorpg gamer then this is different

Yes I believe that is true.

the game is very linear
Outside it isn't really linear...
Quests are linear.. but very fun.

Anyways any game made(And company started by) by ex-key-blizzard employs should always get a shot to be played.

I know I'm alot older than many of you, but I think Blizzard was formed from Psygnosis - a very good game company from Europe I think- from the 80's

Im loading up something no blizzard hold on..

Here is a particular thing,
"Allen Adham: For me it all started back in high school, playing computer games on the old Apple IIs. I had this friend, Brian Fargo, who was working at a tiny gaming company called Boone Corporation. He would invite me in every now and again to play test their games in development. Well, Boone promptly went bankrupt, and Brian and a few of the programmers started Interplay. So I was exposed to gaming early and new that was what I wanted to do. After high school I went to study Computer Science at UCLA and spent my summers coding games for Interplay, Datasoft, and The Software Toolworks. Among them were The Demon's Forge, Mind Shadow, Battle Chess, Global Commander, and Gunslinger.

After graduating from UCLA, Mike, Frank and I started up Silicon & Synapse, known today as Blizzard. Our early projects were all conversions, which allowed our programmers to become familiar with game coding techniques and our artists to ease into game artwork. Commodore 64 Battle Chess, Windows Battle Chess, Amiga Battle Chess II, Amiga Lord of the Rings, and Windows Shanghai were some of our early projects. Our first originals were The Lost Vikings and Rock & Roll Racing for the Nintendo, and those two titles together garnered us a Developer of the Year award and that combination of critical acclaim and sales success is what really put us on the map as a game developer. The rest is history. "

It dosn't say anything about Psygnosis.
But this little search,
http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Psygnosis
Tells me that,
"Psygnosis was acquired by Sony in 1993 to work on the new PlayStation machine, and in 1999 eventually lost the Psygnosis branding to become known as Sony Studio Liverpool."

So probably not.

Yea I remember now, the Psygnosis name disapeared soon after the PS1 was released. I had a good F-1 racing game for PS1 from Psygnosis.

Hell they had to be pretty damn good or Sony wouldn't have bought them.

I remember they were one of the main game producers for my Atari ST home computer (Atari's last home computer series - competing with the Amiga, before Atari's game console "Jaguar" and poor management sent Atari bankrupt)

But then recently someone bought the Atari name...

What was the topic again?
