is there even any competition here?

Went to a guitar shop today looking for a mini amp, and the shop owner was all like:
"Fender make amps so much better than marshall yadda yadda blah bleh mnyeh heh!"
I tried the fender 2 watt, and the marshall 2 watt mini amp (in different stores)
the fender sounded like crap (even for a mini amp!)
while the marshall sounded really great(for a mini amp! )
the guy at the store also went on to say that they dont stock marshalls that often because they arent as good (shock/horror!) and said that the fender minis were better even though the marshalls ones sold out (duh!!! contradiction or what?)
I ended up buying the mini marshall amp in a shop round the corner. and im really pleased with it!
just wondering what everyone elses prefference is...
is this guy completely insane? or are there any reasons as to why some people like the fender amps more in general.

Assuming that I read your post correctly, he was sold out of the Marshalls but still had Fenders. Therefore, he might have assumed you were a "guitar newbie" and tried to sell you on the Fender, because he didn't want you to leave without a purchase and wanting a Marshall amp (which according to you is much better).

So then, if you had happened to be a non-savvy shopper, you'd have bought the Fender, had it for a while, then gone back to the store wanting a better amp, and finding the Marshalls in stock. Bam, two sales from one customer instead of zero.

Then again, he might just be a nutcase :D

Try them both.

Dont let other people decide for you.

Fender has a GREAT sounding clean tone and a sweet reverb.

Marshalls are great for multi-effect solid states. I usually see people that play rock-n-roll on marshalls, and others on fenders (or something else). AC/DC - Yngwie Malmsteen - and i think Led Zeppelin play on Marshalls. Dick Dale, Stevie Ray V, and twangy-type guitarists play fender amps.
