does anyone here know how to play guitar? if you do, is it hard? i want to learn how to play it, especially electric guitar. i know how to play the piano, would that make it easier?

no, but i plan to learn :)

edit: i don't think keyboard knowledge would make it any easier to learn to play guitar, except in that you're already "musical" in a fashion. do you play classical piano or non-classical? do you want to learn classical guitar or something else? (the non-classical is, afaik, much easier to learn)

I play bass guitar and drums yes it would make it easier ina sense of knowing the notes and being able to read music. The only thing you w0ould have to create your own solos and songs and learn to venture out for yourself and learn. and when you do guitar you just gotta keep pushing and pushing to learn about all the great guitarist lik van halen jimi hendrix stevie ray vaughn and learning and learning also if ou wanna be really good try not to just focus on ROCK focus on Jazz also and classical all kinds of styles to influence you pece and goodluck

wow nofx, you sort of read my mind there lol

i play classical and non-classical music on the piano but i always find myself playing the songs i like on the piano (guitar parts most of the time):p i'd like to play today's stuff, like rock basically

Hi there Evil Milk.

I see that you're musically inclined, by how you can play the piano and such. With that, you should be able to easily pick up the guitar. If you REALLY want to do it, and you're good with music, you'll be able to.

and lessons always dont help sometimes they do help... kids think if they take guitar lessons their going to be 1000000 better not necessairly seeing as you probably take piano lessons you wont need this lecture but ill tell you anyway.. you have to practice and practice treat guitar as a job where you have to devote time everyday and dont get discouraged when you run across another player thatys 1000 better than you just learn some techniques from them... and learn how to read tab some sites
www.mxtabs.net
and some others i cant think of just google guitar tabs its pretty easy

I want to learn really bad... I just need to take a class or buy a guitar and learn.

I got me a sweet fender strat, and yes, I rock!

Learning piano is invaluable for composing, as well as reading sheet music. However its not going to help you much in playing the guitar.

What he said. It will be hard at first. A book will help, even though there are online lessons out on the internet. ex: cyberfret.com
Once you know the basics, just practice and mess around. AND learn some songs, as they help you broaden your knowledge of the fretboard.

I had guitar lessons a while ago and learned how to play a few songs, now all I can remember is the G chord. I want to learn bass, I can play simple basslines from some songs by ear :)

A Musical backround definately helps. I played piano for about 3 years as a kid and then stopped. I picked up a guitar about five years ago and just sort of messed around. I've never been for any type of lesson. of course, a couple of friends showed me how to play some songs, but you can pick up a lot of stuff on your own. You'll discover things like harmonics, squeels, slides, muting, hammers you will discover by accident, and then start to realize "hey, that sounds just like (song name here). Playing guitar F**king rocks the phat one! like nofx says, dont just focus on one style. Not even one guitar style! I played electric for the first 3 and a half years, and now im all about accoustic(although my love for electric is still well and alive).A healthy balance would be Nirvana,Foo-Fighters,Lincoln Park,Korn and then Tracy Chapman, Eva Cassidy, Eric Clapton(Do not attempt to re-create!)etc. Tenacious D also has some AWSOME acoustic licks.

I personally play piano (well, used to), drums and about a two years and a bit ago I picked up an acoustic. To be honest, I just needed an motivation to actually play - The first few weeks I got it, I just sat there, plucking a few strings, realising my finger tips were hurting. But eventually, as I started to move around the fretboard quicker and confidently, learning all the major chords and being fluent between them, I started enjoying playing - and from there learnt a few types of power chords and since have had 2 electrics, and I'm still progressing. I would say I'm fairly good at guitar, nothing brilliant - but I've taught myself, I didn't really want lessons strangely enough - I prefer to be work out things independantly, an develop my own style opposed to someone telling how to use theirs. But I suppose a musical background does help, I personally can read music but I find tabs alot more convenient (while often not as accurate), but if you would consider yourself to have a talent within music you should pick things up pretty quickly - but if you do go out and get one, just start with the basics, and move on as you progress, a few of my mates have got one, and they've expected to play hendrix in about a week, and have since just left it in the corner to gather dust :( - a waste really. But, if you do get one, just stick with it - also if you can, try and get something to record yourself playing with, hearing yourself play is a good way to learn, if something sounds odd or wrong etc., and you can correct as necessary.

Good Luck! ;) lol

Don't listen to these guys. (except panda and jimmeh :))

Playing the piano will be a great help when learning the guitar. Maybe not for technique but playing piano and knowing your scales will make it much easier to get really good at guitar. You'll be playing awesome solo's in no time. Music theory is much better learned on piano than any other instrument.

Unless your content to blindly copy other artists then it really doesn't matter one way or the other.

I started playing a year ago from now, didnt have any skills, but a played a litle piano, not if that was of any help.. Anyway I bought a newbie gitar book in musical store (ask for the most simple edition) then my parents gave me a gitar in my birthday; since then i play my gitar like if Pamela anderson where my girlsfriend and you cannot stop touching her.. Best buy ever.. I can play it very well today, thank to taht book, my parents and Tabcrawler.com and olga.net

...Piano will NOT help you that much, on the technical side. But, obviously it will help you with the scales, chords, and basically just knowing how a song feels.
