So I've been on pain meds for a few day and that always jacks with my sleep, for better or for worse. So my most recent hydrocodone induced dream involved me playing a new Age of Empires II style medieval strategy game, only with the scale and unit numbers of Medieval II total war. And it was freaking awesome. It was basically a real time Medieval II only with the unit variety and detail of AoE II.
And that only serves to make even even more disappointed that the next Age of Empires game is what looks like a children's game.

And now I'm itching for a good RTS. Starcraft II never tickled my fancy, are there any other games out there (Not talking like tactical RTS's, I mean base-building, then army building like Empire Earth or AoE) under this category? Are there any being made?

I would recommend Company of Heroes or Universe at War (which everyone else on the internet seem to dislike).

The RTS genre has slowed down a lot recently. I've been investing my time in grand-scale instead.

Where do I get this hydrocodone?
Apparently all you have to do is tear every muscle in your chest and go to the ER for it.

And that's frustrating. I like the detail of RTS. I've always liked models and miniatures and having an RTS game was like having a giant sandbox full of them.

Have you tried Sins of a Solar Empire?

It's a space RTS but has a lot of depth. You start with a planet in a solar system and then you gradually expand and capture other planets, build 100's of ships including huge mother ships. You can be political or you can go for all out war. Generally you have to fight, like most RTS's. I've had some games last 4-6 hours before and you can get solar systems with 100's of planets. You can save the game in multiplayer so there's no worry if people drop out due to connection or whatever. :)
