according to the book marriage is:

"a relatively permanent sexual and economic union betwen a man and a women"

   :|

well, don't know what else to say... :upstare:

"..a relatively permanent..."

oh how progressive of them ..when was it written? red-scare 1950's?

Not all books have your neo progressive propaganda seeping through their pages. Surely you could appreciate textbooks which dont pit classes and ethnicities against each other.

mar·riage
n.

1.
1. The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife.
2. The state of being married; wedlock.
3. A common-law marriage.
4. A union between two persons having the customary but usually not the legal force of marriage: a same-sex marriage.

I don't know if same-sex marriage is legal everywhere yet, kind of hard to change books now...

they could have said "union between two partners of the same sex" ...instead they chose words that shows their biased viewpoint ..the word "relatively" gives the whole sentence a different nuance

u think they should make aup a new word for gay marriage...so people wont get confused, something like: Gayriage.

hmm..

where?

that was funny SimonomiS

umm...slovenia...why? judging from the rest of the book it seem culturaly quite western based.

just wondering cuz if it was printed in canada the wording would be different

hehe...i just read the newer edition of the book (2004) it says:

"a relatively permanent sexual and economic union betwen two or more adults, accepted by the community and accepted by the partners themselves"

hahahah even when they try to sound progressive they fail miserably:

"a relatively permanent " ...still hasnt changed

great find btw

Same author? Still bitter? :P
I'd have to disagree with the "accepted by the community" part, don't think a local community can really stop you, and if the book is about Western culture, I'd have to say the last part is pretty much a given. Or can you marry someone without them accepting?

np, other author (a woman)!

well, in medieval times marriages were directed by your parents!

hence the popularity of "Shotgun weddings" south of the mason-dixon line

what are these shotgun weddings?

edit: they shoot themselves and the one who gets it is the next groom? :E :E jk

no the shotgun is so that the groom doesnt run away

Heh, I always blame money, its what I tell myself when I ask why I'm not like this.

Unless Hugh Hefner had some very very nice parents.

SimonomiS is that you? can I borrow one for an hour or so? if the wife asks I've gone on a beer run :E

you choose ...it's all good :E

if you cant decide ...2 is good too :naughty:

Where was it written, Jverne? It was probably using the state definition of marriage. If it wasn't in written in a country that acknowledges gay marriage then it makes perfect sense. Otherwise it's just lying.

Whoops. Should get better at skim reading.

i'd have to agree with the book, gay marriage = wrong, except when it comes to hot chicks.

:upstare: ...you've never met a lesbian have you?

yeah most lesbians tend to be butch, which is gross and which is why I said except for hot chicks but in that case, they tend to be bi but its all good ;)

hmmm I didnt think it could be possible but you managed in that one statement to be offensive to pretty much every female demographic

They probably weren't writing it to spite gay marriage or anything. I mean when I think of marriage (even before the whole gay marriage issue became big news) that's what I think almost exactly.

even this part:

"a relatively permanent"

he's insinuating that gays are promiscuous

What? It said that about the just man and woman. If someone dies or if someone legally divorces the marriage ends, so it's not permanent in all cases but most.

OMG Stern misread something...the world is indeed going to an end! :E :E jk

it's just that you never miss anything, at least as far i can remember! :E

and yes i don't like sociology, but i've found that every subject dealing with human society (history, psihology, sociology) is preety biased! that's why i rather like physics, but i'm quite fond of history nontheless!

my fault for skim reading ...I've posted in too many threads today :)

Oh :d. I actually wasn't sure if I should reply because I couldn't tell if you were making a joke or not, but then I decided if I didn't get it it wasn't a joke. Which it wasn't. So.. confusion on both sides ;p
