hi,
i'm almost done modeling one of my characters for our multiplayer mod, the trianglecount should be around 4500 (i think that will be low enough no ? or maybe TO low ?) and then my other question, when the unwrap is done, what map should i use to texture it ?
1024*1024?
2048*2048?
2x 1024*1024?
does anyone have an idea what HL2 uses or supports

thanks

512x512 Is pretty safe and with a good UV map its plenty high enough for now. Though I've heard HL2 might be using higher than that now, im not sure though.

In some cases you can probably use two or maybe three if you need to, for example, one for the body, one for the head. Depends on the type of character (background/hero)

For MP I'd probably keep things low to be sure. But I'd do the images very high res, that way you can just scale them down if/when you need to without redoing them all again if you find they could be made higher without problems.

what ichi said. as far as I remember Valve has it set up similar to doom3, in that comps with higher specs will uses 1024x1024 maps, and lower specs use lower res.

Yes, they said the engine can take up to 2048*2048 and they could easily up that limit if it would be necessary. Still pretty high imo, you should do like the Elf said, make your textures high resolution (2048 or 1024) and resample them to 1024 or 512. I don't know how textures higher than 1024 can affect performances though. And I don't think the visual quality in game would be noticable.
