Half-Life 1 Remake in Doom3

I thought HL was a scary game at times. If done properly, I think HL on the DooM 3 engine could be one of the scaries games every.

That is a great mod idea. I hope valve supports the project.

Remake of a game already being "remade?"

Not going to happen sadly.

Though I'd like to see what Surface Tension and Xen would look like....

Combine this remake of Half-life with Half-life source and you have one hell of a remake...it would be an interesting thought.

Woow, cool news :) That could really turn out to be a great game IMO.

All depends on the effort though.

sounds very cool, but with hls and hl2 on the way, I smell a "cease & desist"

hmmm, very interesting, yet I need to see some screeshots or vids

I really don't understand the foolish mod teams who embark on quests such as this one. How hard is it to understand that it's smart to ask permission if you're basing your content on someone else's material? If I were to make a Superman mod I'd contact DC comics to ask for permission before working on anything, any person with half a brain would do the same thing.

Do these guys really expect to pull this through without a cease & desist? Valve will shut these guys down in an eyeblink... HL:S anyone?

Meh, I hope not. HL1:S isn't going to be all that great.
Yey! Exact same everything except physics.

HL:S is NOT a remake it is simply a porting. But that aside I don't really know VALVe might be nice enough to let them go even though they didn't ask permission...or did they :bonce:

i hope they do... HL1 on the doom ngine would be so cool :D theyre very similar as well so it would definately work. i hope when theyve done the models and textures theyll make a demo version :D

Let's hope VALVe doesn't pull a Blizzard on them. Honestly, a free mod can't hurt much.. I don't know of ANYONE who wants to buy HL:S alone; just HL2. I'll be very disappointed in VALVe if they do that.

I'd think Vivendi would be more likely to issue such an order.

I remember when blizzard shut down a remake of sc on err was it wc3? or was it C & C generals or somtin?
Ohh well, thats why there is another one, "Project Revolution". This one don't violate anything though.
Ahhh :).

You guys seem to be dismissing the way a developer sees a "free remake".

Here's what happens when someone takes your game and remakes it or "expands upon it" on a different engine:

1) Immediately the game developer starts to lose sales because people are more interested in the new "shiny" HL1 remake on the Doom 3 engine.

2) The people who bought Doom 3 get to play HL1 for *FREE*. This is one of the major issues, people are playing your game on a different engine for free, and guess who gets the publicity... yeah, the developer who made the engine on which the mod was featured.

3) The modders could do a piss poor job at making the mod and therefore give players who have not played the original game a bad idea of what the game was actually like. Imagine someone taking HL1 and replacing all the enemies with dots, the weapons replaced with untextured cilinders and the story being severly distorted to the point where the game is about "saving the g-man from the big T-Rex in the haunted castle".

4) You don't make any money from it or get any credit.

5) YOU DON'T MAKE MONEY FROM IT

6) PEOPLE GET TO PLAY YOUR GAME FOR FREE (or at least without buying your game in particular)

Sorry for the caps on the last two but I mean to emphasize these two last points because they are very very important. I don't think a lot of people understand what people like these modders can do to developers and how much of a hassle they are when they do stupid things like this project we're talking about here.

The worst part is that these same fools who are trying to port HL1 to the D3 engine without asking for permission will try to paint Valve as a big corporate giant with no heart because they didn't let them finish their mod and made them scrap their work *sob*!

They just piss me off to no end, as a modder I see these people as the ultimate fools who don't deserve my pity. If your project gets canned because you didn't ask for permission then it's your own fault, nobody elses.
