Does anyone know of a mod that implaments Havok into Half-Life? If not, would it be hard to do? That would be completley awesome....is it even possilbe?

Havok is way too advanced for the Quake engine. I'm sure it'd be possible to code some sort of physics engine (maybe just basic ragdoll) into the HL1 engine and I am surprised this hasn't been done yet but I think the best break through you'd make with that is to stop models clipping through walls.

Maybe it's possible with hit boxes?

Well, *possible* - but not to us, because you'd have to license Havok and that's mega $$$.

It might be possible to use a free physics engine such as ODE though, even in HL1.

No but you can bet your ass at some point someone will redo hl1 as a hl2 mod (if valve let them) useing the hl2 engi engi

MrMan: Stick around, when I asked Gabe if I would be ok to do a Half-Life remake in the source engine, he basically hinted that it was already in the works, dunno who's doing it or how far on it is or how it will look. But it stands to reason it should have what your wanting.

If Valve are doing it themselves, or maybe Gearbox, using the original concept work and maybe the high poly models if they had them back then, and updating as needed, I'll more than happily buy the thing, even though I've already got HL1, I'd certainly pay for it if it was updated completely for current machines and the source engine.

If Valve don't remake it in Source. I will.

Yeah, and Im sure most would, Fenric...and I thought you could use the Havok engine for free, but if you wanted to make any profit, you had to buyt it....but Im prolly wrong....

We'll hold you to that :D

But I'd wonder if there would be legal issues - although I know Valve are fairly cool about the mod scene.

They'd probably have a better chance Murray.

MrMan, go to www.havok.com and find out.
Ask them if they think it'd be implementable into HL1.

Koopa, if you made it, showed it to them and liked it, they'd probably buy it off you. Pretty much like they did with CS and DOD.

I don't think you can use Havok unless you pay. I haven't seen any downloads for it, anyway - they make their money from selling it to people.

Playing though Hl1 again though... nugh. I've gone through it so many times I can do the scientists lines for them. Even with flashy shiny graphics I couldn't face it again.

you can count me in on that, its no secret I wanted to do it, and only stopped cause of what Gabe said (since I didn't see the point doing one if they were doing it)... all changes if the one that does turn up isn't any good, its personal then *grins*

I wouldn't be able to do shit though. I'm no good with arty shite.

But The Scientsit never had ragdoll effects before...behold SSH...just redone :)

Thanks for doing the work, MrMan - shame it's no good for mod teams:

I'd come under that.. might look into it. Just don't anybody expect me to foot the bill for the full licence by myself so people can play with it in HL1! lol

How rude of us all...

Welcome to the forum by the way MrMan16 :D

Look at the FPS in them too!!

Chris_D. MrMan is new? heh I didn't even realise, he just seemed to fit in with everyone.. I dunno if thats a good thing or a scary thing :D

MrMan. Yeah, I couldn't believe some of those screenshots when I first saw them, tenebrae 2 isn't fully available yet, but I DL'd the first one, installed Quake and tried it and its all real. Ran like a slug through sticky toffee pudding, but I expected that... You should see some of the things their doing these days with the Doom engine, 3D models instead of 2D images, specular effects, normal maps *grins at Hiro with his normal map talk again;)* the old GL version, huuuuuuge textures. 3D sound and fancy audio effects. Turning the old 2 1/2D engine into something more like the current crop, jumping, looking up and down properly (which the original never had heh) Tons of stuff, different people been at it for years now and its really coming a long way considering what it was before.

I got that, zdoom I think they call it. Like you said, you can look up and down, and it has higher resolutions. Im actually getting ready to DL the Tenebrae for Quake...so it didnt run good? I thought so too...but, I might as well try it myself.

And lets just hope thats a good thing Fenric....

It runs like a piiiiig on my 4200 (with all the effects on), even at low-res. Admittedly a shiny, sexy pig. A 9600/etc. will just about run it sensibly, even more so if you compromise. Anything less than a 4200 forget it.

making a mod of hl1 in hl2 should not be too hard, sp only and release it in Chapters, remake maps, upgrade them, you could add bits in and stuff and also make the ai a whole lot better (useing the "actor" system in hl2)

I would love to play hl1 again like that :p

well my machine is for work really, not the fancy game playing so 1gig is fine for my work, just not too hot for new games. So if you've got something faster, which is likely, and a better card then you should get better speeds

It was certainly playable though, at around 640x480/800x600 you could play it and it ran quick. I think it was the character textures that were the speed killer.. dial them down and it seemed fine with all the other effects running, even the cool volumetric lighting worked well (never thought I'd see that in quake1 :))

You do need the original game though, as its just the engine for download. Though you can find replacement objects and high res texture packs on the net (I think via the link sections) though those are currently WIP so only some stuff is available, but it looks really professionally done

It was realy well done. And if you have everything maxed, and the res on 1024 x 768 x 32 it laggs a bit...or it does on my machine. But this isnt H-L 2 related, so I better stop

yeah not entirely HL related, except if this can be done with the Quake engine after it became open source. It's fair to assume that the same can be done with the HL1 engine if/when that ever becomes open source. Probably wouldn't happen, if a Source HL1 version is successful, but I'd bet a lot of money coders out there would love to do it, just for the sake of being able to say they did it, as a fun challenge or something. Also something like this would extend its life further, I imagine if Tenebrae 2 goes well and works well (ie: faster than I imagine its doing right now heh) then mods could continue to work with that engine. Imagine if the same happened with HL1, lot of old mods out there that were great fun but might never be converted to the Source engine. So a new lease of life for them via something like this...

... and it all loops back around to your original question about using Havok (or something similar) in HL1, my answer now would be, probably, something similar... if/when HL1's engine becomes open source

How's that for turning things back around to on-topic eh hehehe

I bet you stared at your monitor and thought for 5 minutes how to turn the semi off-topic into a fullfeldged...on-topic? GOD, this is confusing...but hey, good job ;)

10 minutes + furrowed brow + chin rubbing, but I wont tell if you wont :D

hl2 is backwards compatible, in other words HL1 content is easily ported into HL2 (adapting its physics system, ragdolls, lighting etc)

in fact it is already done apparently.

however I want to see a REDONE hl1, with high quality models/textures/maps etc, rather than HL1 with Havok.

That would of course only be the maps, not the models.
