Half-Life 2 and CS freezing

I am at my wits end folks.

Here is the story in a nutshell:

Purchased a Asus A8V motherboard and AMD64 3500+ chip. Using a Radeon 9800Pro video card with the latest drivers (4.12 I think).

Used to be able to play Half-Life (with the sound stutter problem) and CS played really well. Downloaded the "updates" and now CS crashes as soon as I get into a server (black screen with the wonderful looping sound). Played half-life without any problems (except for the sound issue). Downloaded the new patch for Half-Life today and low and behold I get screwed textures and the game locks up after 30 seconds. I think the sounds were fixed but who knows since the game locks up. GREAT!!! I am so happy they released a patch for me!! (sarcasm at its best)

This is the only game I am having trouble with. Doom3, Call of Duty, and everything else I throw at my machine runs smooth as silk. Is anybody else having trouble with the game locking up their machine and needing a hard reboot to get back to Windows?

Thanks.

Strangest thing EVER!

I turned off the VPU recovery option for my video card and did a reboot. Everything seems to be running smooth again.

Oh well, I guess I solved it myself.

I spoke too soon. Booted up the computer today and it is back to locking up again.

It is very annoying when you consider the fact that I played for hours yesterday without any problems. Now I can't play again. ARGH!!

Wick - The stuttering was gone in Half-Life 2. Played for about 4 hours (doing the single player missions again) and didn't have any problems.

I turned off the VPU on my ATI card and it got rid of the stuttering, but today it seems as if the stuttering returned.

I wish I could help you but the stupid game locks up in about 30 seconds. I can't even get past the beginning options screen.

I was thinking it might be my power supply but I have disconnected all non-essential hardware from it and it still locks the system.

I hope someone from Valve reads these messages because this is getting annoying.

Hummm..........

Dont blame valve, the game rules and it works fine for me
