half life 2 and episode one stuttering problem?

The fps is just incredibly slow. Strange thing is that this problem only became serious after about an hour into HL 2 and is just unbearable in episode one. My computer specs should be able to handle HL2 and episode 1 with relative ease so i don't really get what the problem is. I've updated all my drivers, and i've tried lowering all the video and audio options, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? BTW, i have vista home.

My computer never crashes though. Wasn't this stuttering problem infamous when hl2 first came out at 04? I've posted my problmes in 4 different gaming forums, and not a single person has answered yet. I thought this was a pretty big problem?

The st-st-st-stuttering problem th-th-then was some sort of au-au-audio problem, not an f-f-f-fps thingy, I believe.
