This should put a smile on your Face! the guy's at the German website PC Games Hardware have posted news that Valve software will be releasing a Half-Life 2 Benchmark Tool before the demo and game are released! Click Read more for the Google translation! unless Degger does a translation for us?

developer valve wants to publish 07.08.2003 12:26 o'clock - before the hot desired help Life 2 at the end of of Septembers comes on the German market, bench mark on basis of the used SOURCE engines. Appropriate rumors were confirmed now by a statement by Gary McTaggart, developer with valve. In an interview he said: "definitely a HL2 bench mark before release of the play comes." A release date of the bench mark was however not called.

That will make me upgrade without any distortion.

Yep and about 85% of people here have already seen that interview where he said that statement and another German site have already published this article yesterday which was posted here (I'd forgotten but I used the search function to prove how easy and useful it was and wahey).

Yes, this has been known for some time. But before you get too excited, it's only being released to the press and hardware manufacturers. It's not like we'll be able to download it and play with it ourselves. Sorry.

Using that ATi/Doom 3 mishap as an example, I'd bet that the benchmarking tool will be online within days, or even hours. I mean, if it's being released to the press, then that could be hundreds of people who could just "accidentally" put it in their Kazaa shared folder, or "slip" and accidentally make an FTP server to download the benchmark tool from. Personally, I can't wait to hear about some press guy getting fired ;)

It will run a scene using the games graphics engine and report to you frame rate, features you can run, that kindof thing. Like 3DMark but with HL2 graphics.

id just hate to get this... run it... and find out it runs like crap....

Great, then all these stupid "Will my computar machine run hl2" topics will stop,

Crap, it's not being released to the general public? I hate having to try and match my setup up with a hardware tester. It's never anywhere close to what my system is.

I saw this in the mornin on a news site, but I had to go so I didnt get to post it in the news section just yet, but when I got back no-one else did, So I put it there now.

Wow, that's cool. Right now I am upgrading my computer. Well, see if my new computer will rock. Got a P4 2.4c(ghz), Abit IS7-G, 1gb Golden Dragon PC3500, Radeon 9700 Pro(For right now. Will upgrade when the new ATI/Nvidia cards come out). Anyways, I won't blabble on about all my hardware. So, all I have to say is......HELL YEAH!!!

Whaa?

So its not going to be released into the public?

I wonder if gabe would comment if we asked him?

Not released to the public?!!! What?! Well, if that's the case, you know you will beable to get it a hour later of it's release on kazaa, lol!

Don't be so sure, alot of people are................."resourceful"

It better darn well be 'slipped'... I mean... what have they got to lose by releasing it to the public? Bandwidth? Hah...

It doesn't make sense for them not to release it to the public. Because if everyone runs it and sees how crappy their system really is they will run into the store to upgrade.

the media? at least thats what was said on the first page..

it would make sense to allow the general public access to something like this.. would help in determining what needs upgrading for those that can't settle for anything but the maxed out features/performance.

LoneDeranger, I think maybe if it ran like crap, some people just wouldn't end up buying it, not all of the planet are h-l2 crazed like us :p

I doubt Valve would get any kickback from hardware sales. :p

quote a source please.

as far as i know the benchmark tool will be released to the general public, otherwise what is the point? the way they've talked about it certainly makes it sound like it'll be available publicly, and thats what i'm going to believe until you post a quote or a link to a source.

Ssssssshhhh!!
<Whispers> Valve might hear you!

erm, i don't remember reading that a tool will be released, i remember someone asking about one, and the answer was that they have a tool and will be releasing the results closer to release.

maybe you misread.

Will there be a benchmarking routine in Half-Life 2?

Yes. There will be a detailed benchmark released before the game ships where you can run a particular card through any of the DirectX levels where appropriate.

We target 60 FPS, and then adjust details accordingly. At E3 we were running 60 Hz on a 128 MB 9800 at 13something by 7something (the resolution of the plasma screen, which I don't remember exactly).

We are in the middle of a lot of performance analysis and tuning with ATI and NVIDIA. We will release benchmarking tools before we ship.

Subject: HL2 performance numbers

Hi Gabe,

I feel guilty sending this to you since I suspect you're being inundated with emails every minute of every hour buuuuuuuuut.... ;-)

Any idea if you guys are planning on releasing some performance metrics/benchmark numbers to the net before Half-Life2's release? I'm sure there are legions of folks out there wondering what kind of performance they can expect out of the game running on high end ATI/nvidia hardware. 30 fps? 60fps? 100fps? I realize the engine is highly scaleable but for the 'ultimate' HL2 experience (ie 1024x768 to 1280x960, 32 bit color, all the eye candy cranked, 60 fps+) are the ATI 9800Pros and Nvidia 5900Ultra's going to be able to deliver? I know I for one want to pull the trigger on a 9800Pro but there's no way I'm jumping in if its not going to run the game the way it deserves to be run. I know the hardware AND gaming sites would love to get this kind of data a la the preliminary Doom3 benchmarks that id/nvidia released a while ago.

Any chance?

96 days and counting!

Regards!

ok thanks for that, its amazing how quickly some things disappear into the ether when it wasn't dwelled on at the time.

I don't remember where, but I do remember reading a quote from Gabe saying the benchmark software would be released "to the media" before the game. This would seem to imply there will not be an official public release. Of course, if people choose to use unofficial channels to obtain the software that's up to them, but I plan to respect Valve's wishes.
