Half-Life 2 C++ error?

Okay, I decided to play HL2 for a long time and this popped out:

Only one instance of the game can be running at one time.

It popped three windows saying the same thing. (And yes, I clicked it only once, if someone thinks I clicked it three times.)

After I closed the windows this popped out:

Runtime Error!

Umm, I guess so, the title of the second warning box is Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

does it happen everytime or only occasionally

Yes, it happens every time. Other Steam games work propebly (like Counter Strike:Source etc...), expect some third party HL2 games like Garry's mod and Plan of Attack.
