Half Life 2 - can't start new game

Hi guys. I have the Counter-Strike Source + Half Life 2 by Bluntmann Utilities. CSS works fine but for half life 2, this is how it goes: Starting the application works fine. I click 'new game' which takes me to the list of chapters. i select chapter 1 'point insertion'. I click 'start new game' however this just takes me back to the opening menu screen. What can i do to play hl2? By the way, the version of CSS + HL2 has no steam.
