I'm getting constant "hard crashes" when trying to play HL2, and I was wondering if there's any guaranteed way to put a stop to it. Play time varies from 10 minutes to half an hour plus, then it will invariably crash, forcing me to reboot.

(I should note that the sound disappears completely, instead of looping like I've heard happens with most comps)

So, any bright ideas?

Do you get any error messages such as the memory cannot be read error or anything of the such?

Specs:

ATI Radeon 9600xt 256mb ddr memory
Processor: 1.8 ghz (can't remember the manufacturer's name)
RAM: 512 mb

No error messages, the game just locks up completely and won't respond to any input.

Same here. Betcha have a VIA mobo too.

Sounds like either your CPU or GPU is overheating.
First, make sure all your drivers are up to date. If they are, check your temps with whatever app you can get.

You might also want to check your hd temp
