Half Life 2 crashed at log in

Well i got sick of trying to get all my pc games working in ubuntu so i reinstalled windows xp pro today.

World of Warcraft, Lineage II, Battlefield 2, Age of Mythology as well as Counter-Strike Source and Day of Defeat Source all work fine. Yet when i try to log into Half Life 2 it crashes at the first load screen. This was a fresh install of windows and i tried both the ati and omega drivers for the video card (Radeon 9800pro) and i still can't seem to run Half Life 2.

I did a Google search and found a few threads about this, but there were no answers. If anyone has any idea of what is wrong and/or knows how to fix this, please let me know.

Do you get a error message? What does it say?

I get the basic windows error. "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"
