Half-Life 2 Crashes PC!

Hi!

I recent bought The Orange Box (not downloaded from Steam, from discs). When I try to run Half-Life 2, it gets to the point where it's almost done with the loading bar for the first level, and then it RESTARTS MY PC!!! It's very frustrating. If you need any information about my hardware/software just ask. I'm running Windows XP SP3, Direct X 9.0c, and I'm using an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9600 graphics card. Help me please!

Do you have the latest video drivers installed?

Right-click My Computer, select Properties. Next select the Advanced tab, and under Startup and Recovery click Settings. Then under System failure, untick Automatically restart. Now when you get a BSOD, your computer will not restart and it will show you the error. Tell us this error.

All that happens is that a blank blue screen appears. It's apperance is simialr to that of the infamous Windows Blue-Screen, but there's no text. When nothing happend for several minutes, I turned off my PC with the power button, but there was no five-second delay that is customary with locked-up computers. Odd. DEATH TO THE BLUE SCREEN!

:sniper: :(

EDIT: I forgot to mention that Portal works fine. Just Half-Life 2 so far seems to not work.

In Steam right click on Half-Life 2 -> Properties -> Local files -> Verify integrity of game cache
Once it finishes try HL2 again.

I'd like to avoid installing new drivers if I can, they can be a pain
Really why? Since Portal works fine and HL2 is an old game I'm guessing that it isn't a graphics driver issue but it is definitely worth a try.

Because ATI makes installing new drivers way harder than it should be.

It didn't work. The blue screen remains. :( :( :(

I disagree :p

Well, after installing the new drivers I disagree with myself . ATI used to make harder than it needs to be.

I did, by the way, install the latest drivers. Still no luck. Any ideas?

EDIT: Does anyone know how to change their "creature"? I'm a scanner, but I wanna be a strider ! Is that dictated by your posts or what?
