Half-Life 2 Does Nothing!

OK I've downloaded Half-Life 2 from Steam which tells me it's all ready to run. When I run it however the Preparing to play Half-Life 2.. window pops-up, stays there for a few seconds then closes and nothing happens. Even if you wait for 10 mins. I've even checked Task Manager and can see nothing that looks very Half-Lifish. Please help... ;(

Me too, it says preparing to play half life2 or counter strike:source then it just goes away and nothing happens. I the game is 100% acquired.

Have you tried opening up the Steam Monitor?

Even though the Preparing to play Half-Life2 window says it's ready to play, it's not.

Or right-click on Half-Life2 in the Games window and open up Properties.

I'll bet you'll find that it still has some downloading left.

Be patient.

It will all load.

No, unfortunately, 100% complete no updating needed. Monitor: Steam is not updating any games, properties: Ready to Play, Offline Mode Ready, 100% acquired.

What are your system stats, alexpt?

I would humbly suggest checking some of the other threads in this forum.

flashing my dvds firmware fixed it.. Only sometime I most try 2-3 times before it start

O.k. I read the other thread and it seems like this might work for me, if I can figure out how to do it.
How do I update the firmware or flash my Philips dvd drive. I have the Philips 8631 dvdrw that came with my dell 8400, can somebody tell me where I can go to update it, I just bought this computer like a month ago.

O.K. I finally got the game to play but I'm not at where I last saved the game, I seem to have went back a couple of saves oh well atleast I can play now.
After reading some of the other threads I tried uninstalling my dvd rw program which is Sonic and now I can play both games. I have a Dell 8400 with the Philips 8631 DVDRW.

I had the same problem with the same Philips DVD+-RW 8631 drive and I fixed the firmware, but now when I try to start half life 2 it says "No Disc Inserted" !!!!!!!! WTF, how do I get this damn game working!?

Have you tried doing what i said above, uninstalled whatever program you use to burn dvds, mines was sonic which came with dell, I have the disc so I can just reinstall once Valve has a patch for it. It's working great for me after I did it.

Have you've tried:
Closing down deamon tools (if you have it that is)
Upgrading to Servicepack2 (if using XP)
Disabling DVDRW
Flashing drive with latest firmware


Found this one on another forum, maybe it's useless but you'll never know unless you've tried it.

6. Double click it/ right click choose properties - whatever it will then let you install them through steam which will download all the files you need. This way you won't have to portion of the retail install that tells the game to check you DVD is inserted.

I have exactly the same problem guys! Bought Half life 2 retail version, installed it...everything is fine. But once I went starting it, there nothing happened. There only opened a window which said "preparing to play Half Life 2..." then it closes and for a few moments my DVD-rom is spinning loudly and I can see my HD is busy...but there still starts nothing, nothing at all. With Counterstrike source i have the same problem...still not any patch released by VALVA or something? And does someone send an email to Gabe Newell or someone else yet?

I too have the same issue, but mine involves the CD version (standard edition), so I'm not sure if my problem is even related to your's. Hopefully I can figure out what's wrong with my computer, although I can't see what prevented my game from starting after it passed the CD-check.

Try ejecting the disc "DVD" and re-insert it again and click on "retry". It should work after that. I'm having that same problem and would like to why it doesn't see it in the first place.

having the same problem here, its defianetly to do with needing new firmware/drivers. I have a Philips DVD RW+ 8601 (came with my dell 4700) no drivers available so im f**ked.
Convinced Dell to exchange my Philips for a NEC drive - it comes on thursday, please please please let this work.
