I have seen plenty of people with an issue where the game freezes or crashes on load-up, but this is different. I can get into the game and play it, and it might last for 20 minutes or 20 seconds before the game just closes to desktop with no error messages at all.

Now, when I first installed Episode 1, it complained that my graphics card drivers were out of date and this may cause problems, so I upgraded to the very latest nVidia drivers but the problem remains. I switched back a few months worth to driver version 81.98 but I still get the same problem.

It is worth noting that I have not yet noticed similar problems with HL2 of CS:Source.

My system spec is:
2800 sempron
1gb ddr ram
geForce 6 6600 graphics card
asrock mobo with on board sound
200gb HD

Anything else needed?

Do you have the latest version of DirectX 9.0 (June Update) ?

Hi, thanks for replying!
I believe I do, but I shall download the newest and install them just in case. I'll report back if it works :).

Reinstalling the latest DX drivers solved all my problems I had with it.

I installed the lastest DirectX drivers but unfortunately it's not solved it :(.

Was it your first install? If not, try reinstalling them, I know it sounds weird, but it solved all my dx problems.

Edit - And is your mobo / fan excessively hot? Stick your hand inside your computer and see, and make sure your 6600's fan is running properly.

Thanks for replying.
The mobo is running at 59 degrees, which should be fine for it.
The fan on the gfx card seems to be working fine as well.

I've just reinstalled the latest graphics and re-installed the lastest DirectX, I even took my game back and got a new copy, uninstalled, then reinstalled using the new copy and the problem is still the same. It is crashing at the same time now. Just after me and Alyx drop down into a room with a recoring of Breen on the screen, then a 'thing' moves underneath the floor and goes int oa kind of lift. The screen then flashes 4 or 5 times and Alyx says 'What the hell was that thing', then then moves to get her door-opener thing out of her pocket and just at that point, the game crashes to desktop.

Something must be causing this, and I just can't figure out what...

Argh, I need help with this, or I have just thrown away £20.
I sent a request for help on the Steam support thing, but I don't have my hopes up on getting a response.
