Ok, I got Half Life 2: Episode 1 all preloaded and prepurchased. I got it all sorted the minute it was released. Loaded up the game, started loading the first level then BAM! It stopped loading. A little over halfway it just didnt budge! Task manager showed that hl2.exe was using 0% of the CPU usage and steam.exe was using 50% It was just stuck like this.

I changed from full screen to windowed mode, and that enabled me to load the actual first level. Started playing, now every so often, the same damn thing will happen. The game will just freeze, sound will stutter etc... and Steam (or hl2.exe) is using 50% while the other is using 0% of my CPU. It happens at random times, sometimes when I'm playing, and even when I'm trying to save sometimes. This is NOT funny I am NOT amused >=|

Has anyone had this problem before? How the HELL do I fix this because as you can probably guess.. I am quite pissed off at the moment

[EDIT] Oh, and just to add.. I tried validating my game cache, but that seemed to do nothing...

Yeah, I'm trying to update my Graphics drivers at the moment.. I hate doing this though, every time I update... everything to do with my displays messes up one way or another... So far, I've gone through 6 resets and two BSODs only to have one monitor not working and the working one lagging =/

*cries*

Looks like it is my drivers though.. Damn you ATi

AAAAARGGGHHHHHH
I've spent the last two damn hours trying to install the latest ATi drivers... but to no avail! Every time I restarted my computer after installing the new 6.5 ATi drivers, I got a page fault from ati2mtag.sys in a BSOD. I've got my computer working on some old Omega drivers, I'm downloading the latest omega drivers now... this had better fix it or else >=|

Ok, finally got it fixed. For anyone else experiencing the same problem, try using the 6.4 Catalyst drivers. They worked for me and well, what a game it is ;)

Enjoy!

I have the same problem, though it's related to the sound, because if I run the game with -nosound, it runs fine, but if I just run it normal, same problem you described occurs except much more frequently, and it uses ALL my CPU (Hyperthreading is disabled, therefore)... And to my knowledge, there is no fix, and there won't be a fix, despite people concluding that it is a problem in the game itself.

It happened to me too, I done what TheDan done even though my drivers were fine.

What about those who have the Geforce 7800 GTX? I updated my driver and it crashed. I rolled back the driver and it crashed. Some say its the engine and not the drivers. I just tried playing Minerva 2 and it crashed also. Any other game i have runs fine. I guess i'll just wait for the patch.

Also, something weird happens. After the crash and then I reboot, I try to start up steam and only steam, it then shuts off my computer. No logoff or anything. It powers off just like a power outage. Happened a couple times already.

I also did the -nosound command and it still crashed. From the start, I got about 3 minutes into it, about where Dog opens the debris to let you and Alyx through and then you come to the clearing right before the chunk of rock falls where Dog was.
