Does any1 know if any expansion packs r planned for half life 2 like there was for half life 1?

Which sort of expansion packs would ya all like to see?

There was a rumor of an Alyx expansion but that's far from certain.

Personally I'd either want to play as a Combine or a member of the Resistance

Theres been talk of expanded material looking into some charecters back story, like alyx etc. I think its highly likely we will be seeing new stuff for HL2, maybe they will even include a hl2 themed mp, who knows :D

I think it would be cool if they released a prequal to half life 1. Also an Alyx expansion to hl2 would be cool as well.

It would probably take another 5 yrs to make half life 3 because they would need to create a new engine. We would need expansions to fill us in any gaps in half life 2's storyline.

Acutally that won't be happening. Valve has already said that they will NOT be creating a new engine for HL3 as Source is fully upgradable as technology progresses. They estimate that they'll need at most 2 years to do HL3 once they decide to make the game.

Besides, the invested $40 million in Source - I hardly think they're going to abandon it after one game.

I doubt it'd take another five years "to make a new engine"- I was under the impression that Valve were going to stick with Source for as long as possible, pushing its operational boundaries and potential to new limits.

As for expansions, I'd welcome a resistance/Combine point of view (*cough* or Shepherd's return *cough*), but for some reason living the history of principle characters doesn't appeal to me. I mean, if you played Alyx or Kliener, it would undermine the fact that you're them, simply because you've already seen their mannerisms, their behaviour around Gordon and their colleagues, even how the speak- it wouldn't feel like Half-Life and the whole "you are Gordon Freeman" obsessions that cost us mirrors and a speaking protagonist in the first place.

Source will be around for 5 -10 years due to the nature of the engine itself being upgradeable.

If they make a follow-up to Op4 or BS, it will also be a scientific name.

im working on a mod called HL2: Combine Assault
its where you play as the combine

2 expansion packs :

- Allied Force

- Yellow Shift

Yellow shift?
Hardly keeping with the science terminology now is it. :p

Make it Red Shift. That way, we can play as Neo-Communist Russians who have teamed up with the Combine and are helping opress the resistance. And Red Shift does fit the science terminology.

Yes you can have red or blue.

Where'd you get $40 million from? Last I heard (and this was sometime early this year when someone asked) Gabe said that they had spent around $20 million developing HL2, which would include developing Source and the game files for HL2, CS:S etc.
I hardly think they've spent another $20 million in the last 6 months...

It's inevitable. In fact, Valve has already hinted at releasing some Steam only content, such as an expansion featuring Alyx Vance's backstory.

I would love to see a follow up to Opposing Force. It would be cool if it was set before the events of Half-Life 2 so we could see the earth being conqured.

Heheh... I wouldn't mind seeing an Op4: Source come to think of it.

I still feel uncomfortable about the whole character backstory idea, but I just can't put the reason into words- bleurgh.

I wouldn't mind seeing one from the G-Man's perspective. Might reveal too much of the overall series story tho.

No doubt they'll be related to the main storyline like the old expansions (which is a very cool way of extending a game, probably the best IMO). They'll also have those scientific nod names like before too.

Only problem with this idea, I'm not sure how you could turn "manipulative bastard" into a gameplay concept.

I'm sure if anyone could do it, the boys and girls at valve could. Might start a new genre ;)

EDIT: Thinking about it, you could potentially add some kind of ICO style gameplay to it. Or that really old amiga game with the dog and the sleepwalking kid (don't remember the name, Sleepwalker or something). Where you have to manipulate Gordon into doing what you want him to do to progress through the story.

Obviously we'd have to have some action moments in there too. G-Man in source with a rocket launcher in his pocket. Nice.

I think you should take that a bit further and call it Red Shift Happens! hahahaha.....I am so freakin funny!........uh........sorry. :dozey:

Sleepwalker... now there was a clever game...

I reckon a game with the G-Man would be more puzzle-oriented than most of the series so far... maybe more like an RPG, too...

Eh, I'd like to see a "Opposing Force 2", something involving Adrian Shepherd (Preferably worked into the Combines POV) as well as something from the Resistance's perspective.

Valve certainly have plenty of projects to choose from to keep us occupied until HL3.

i can see it now. HALF-LIFE 0
"You play Hl0 as Text-Book wielding Gordon Freeman, a college student who was just accepted to MIT. The action gets intense when you cant find your homework and then come into class late. You are Gordon Freeman."
