Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, but maybe someone can answer my question.

I've tried to send HL2 and HL2 ep.1 to a friend as a gift through steam as I already own and just got the orange box. The process seems to go ok on my end ok, the email sends and she gets it, but she says whenever she clicks the link to get the gift she just gets page cannot be displayed. She does have a steam account already. I have waited the 24 hours and resent the email, but still get the same problem. Anyone else have a similar problems or know a work around? I tried emailing on the steam site, but I don't expect a response anytime soon, and their support page isn't much help.

thanks for any info!

Sigh, this is an obvious problem which Valve should really fix.

Tell her to look at her address bar when she gets the error message. It should be different. Make sure her Steam is on, then tell her to select the address bar and press Enter. She should get a Steam use verification thing, which she should agree to. That should work.

thanks very much for the reply Narvi

I'm not sure what you mean by "different". When she clicks on the link in the addressbar it opens a new window which simply has the normal IE "page cannot be displayed" error. The address in the address bar is the exact same as the link in the email. I selected the address bar, hit enter, all it does is reload the same "page cannot be displayed" error.

We've even tried copying the link directly and pasting it into a new browser, same thing.

She does have steam open the whole time. I even tried it on a different computer than her normal one, but got the same result.

I have tried that also, the problem is not her getting it, it's her being able to open the email link

What browser is she using? Maybe it would help if you sent her the setup file for the new Opera or Firefox and see if it helps to use either of those browsers as a one off.

I'm interested in seeing how you get this resolved, since I'm thinking of sending gifts to some PC illiterate people and really don't want to run into the same problem...

Ok.. so I don't really know what happened, but after the 3rd try of sending it, it finally worked... thanks to everyone who tried to help me!!

help plz

omg i have the same problem my firned sent it to me and it comes up with cannot find sever did u do anything diffrent the 3 time?

Consider yourself lucky. I gave HL2 and HL2 E1 as a gift to my brother and now the only games I have still activated and playable are those two. The rest of the Orange Box is gone.

Valve better fix this one, or I'm done buying their software. I'll just pirate it all and not be out any cash if it quits working.
