half life 2 keeps freezing at loading point

it was freezing with looping sounds, so i changed my sound card to a different slot, and now it will freeze at a loading screen, but no looping sounds anymore? any suggestions on what i should do? i updated my drivers and all...oh and ive had Half Life 2 for along time now, and when i first got it, it ran smooth as a babys bottom, its jus messin up now...maybe cuz of a steam update a while back? i dunno...
