Hi there,

just lately Half Life 2 keeps freezing up on me with loopind sound & takes ages to return to desktop.

I'm running it on:-

P4 3.2gig HT processor
1 gig ram
160 gig HDD
Ati Radeon Gecube X850XT Platinum edition uniwise edition 256mb gfx card
Sounblaster audigy 2 sound card

I have tried reinstalling the game but it still does it, any ideas on how to fix it? as when it is running it's smooth as anything!

Update drivers for everything, then go to the movies and watch the transporter 2, cool movie.

I have all the latest drivers, & it doesn't happen on any other games.

I enjoyed the first Transporter movie!

Any error messages? Maybe you have something else open in the background causing the problem? Scan for viruses possibly...

Need some way of identifying what exactly causes your problem, is there anything at all? Any number or code somewhere to find out what happend? Does the game always freeze in the 100% same location? maybe use console to start the first map?

It seems to freeze at random points & not in particular places, sometimes I can play for hours with no freezes & sometimes minutes, there are no error messages.

Scanned for spyware & Viruses, all clear.

You are running a legal copy of the game on Steam, right?

Fair enough, fair enough. A lot of the problems that people post about on here tend to be because it's a pirate version.

I really don't know what you can do. You've reinstalled it, checked your drivers. Of course I'm no expert and I don't even know where to start, apart from the obvious. I guess you could just play it and save frequently.

Hmmm, sounds like your RAM is buggering up. If you have two RAM sticks, try taking one out (ask a qualified person to do this!) and restart the computer. If the problem still persists, use the other RAM stick. If it's still happening, it's one of the other hardware (probably motherboard)

man, this is the most popular HL2 problem

I also get it since I got a new mobo and CPU

the only way to get rid of it is either turnoff sound on your computer, or remove your soundblaster and use the integrated sound device

go to Valve's support, it's the no. 2 popular problem I think

I wonder if I have the same problem.. For me it happens only when I try to adjust the gamma slider, and not just in HL2 but generally in all games I've tried. Sound starts looping and everything freezes. I can't even get back to desktop, have to use reset.

Playing without sound really isn't an option and my mic doesn't work too good with my integrated sound chip. Don't want to be putting the soundcard back everytime I want to use i.e. skype.. So I have to figure out another solution.

Specs:
sempron 3000+
Asrock K8VM800
512 DDR
Radeon 9550GE 128Mb
SB Live 24bit

Ahhhhh,

I recently moved my soundcard down to the bottom slot in my PC, although it did still crash from time to time it was no where near as often as it does now!!

That might be it!!

Right, so I moved the soundcard back up to a higher slot & it still hasn't fixed the problem! (I know the soundcard isn't at fault because it used to run fine!)

I have all the latest drivers, have defragged, done a virus scan, cleaned out all spyware etc.

It's so annoying because it does it on DOD also!!

I don't think there is a problem with my Ram as all my other games run fine!

If somebody could tell me any other ways to sort this problem I would be eternally grateful!!

if source has aglitch this will fix it

not sure if it will work but if source has aglitch this will fix it

use these to validate your install and fix corrupt files.
hope this helps in some way :sniper:

Well I tried this when I went home for lunch and it verified all the files & didn't download anything, so I take it that means there is no corrupt files!

u have to restart steam

u have to restart steam and launch the game for it to replace files sorry i forgot to mention it before.. tell me if its still happening.
if your running an nvidia card it might be some glitch in that. especialy if its a 1.0 shader card or dx8 card.
good luck. :sniper:

Odd, i don't believe it to be your hardware, you have the exactly same specs as me and mine plays perfectly.
