Half life 2, loading screen freeze

please please help me!, i have bought the dvd version, and installed it, i have had the cd key verified and the opportunity to print a receipt.
Steam is installed, and when i right click half life and look at properties, it says 100% aquired and ready to play, also offline mode is ready.
when i try to play, i get past the valve logo, and a loading screen appears ( a hazy cityscape?) and thats it, my mouse pointer freezes up, and nothing happens at all.

I've just brought the Silver package from Steam,
I downloaded it all in 5 hours, and then I got the same problem!

When I goto shut my PC down (using the manual shutdown (button on front of PC)), there have been some diffferent pop-up windows, but i cannot see them whilst the game is loaded, as the game locks my PC up!

Some times its a weapons model that couldn't load other times it is something else!

Does any one know how to fix the 'freezing loading screen'!

Same problem as Kevo17

I'm having the exact same problem as Kevo17. I get past the intro picture of the guy with the valve in his eye and get the blurry city scape picture for a while and just as it starts to move to the next screen, it freezes up.

I also can't play CS Source for more than half of a second after I spawn before it freezes.

exactly the same deal here... except i've got to download it for 10 hours first... sonofabitch...

once it locks up i can "sleep" my PC and wake it up again where I can get back to a semi frozen desktop, task manager shows that big surprise, HL2 is not responding...

Valve has done a runner and nobody in answering anything... great customer service... "pay your $50!... oh it doesn't work?... tough... screw you..."

Yeah, I'm not too happy either. Mine crashes to desktop at the load screen, but actaully worked when I first unlocked it. Explain that. Just broke by itself.

What I've tried so far:

All of my drivers are the latest versions.

I tried several Launch Options independently.

-d3d
-gl
-wavonly
-nojoy
-dxlevel 70
-dxlevel 81
-freq60
-freq75

No luck with any of them.

Could it be my Athlon 64 ?

Other specs are :

SBLive!
Radeon9600xl 128mb
1gb RAM

SAME SHIT WITH ME GUYS! I got the game free with my sweet purchasing of Radeon 9600, i get to the hazy city then it just stops working, i can move the mouse but it dosent do anything, when i do CTRL ALT DEL it just sais not responding, if anyone would like to keep in touch with me and will swap ideas if we find a fix, my email is [email protected] and my name is Travis.

I spent 2 weeks trying everything, then somebody suggested I add this to my launch options, and it worked for me....

+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1

I'm running it on a Intel Centrino M 1.4 laptop with only 64mb video card & 512mb RAM

try the '-console' command in HL2 launch options. that bypasses the loading screen & just gives you the options list.

right, the -console worked, but now it crashes and gives me an error message when I try to start a new game (see below please).

Trnce- go to steam, click play games, right click and select properties on HL2, click on launch options.

Same Problem... fixed, but...

I had the same "freeze at the blurry screen" problem when i first install hl2. I updated the drivers for my nvidia graphics card and the game correctly finished the loading sequence and i was allowed to play.

However, after i play for a few minutes i have two new problems:
1) If i go to a new area that requires a new loading sequence, the game reverts to the beginning menu
2) If i try to load a previously saved game, the game attempts the load and then returns to the opening menu.

Any ideas?

close launch options
launch HL2

By the way thanks for all the help everyone, it's now fully working for me.

I don't suppose anyone could recommend me a mid range graphic card. My motherboard doesn't do AGP 8x, only 4x I think, so it would probably have to be a PCI card.
