Hi guys

I am new here and I am from Austria.

I hope somebody know the answers to my questions.

I recently played Half Life 2 again, because its such a great game and I also watched the E3 trailer again, and please if you look at the pictures, the left one is ingame, and the right is also the E3 ingame trailer shot.

AND check this out, have a look to the cars, they look much better in the e3 ingame as in my version, I've the original US version, bought over ebay.

I cant understand that, but I am sure, that nobody really recognize that...

my system:

Core 2 duo 6600
Nvidia Geforce 7900 GT KO

I think thats say enough

Wow. . i thought every gamer out there knew what E3 was. . .

and they prolly toned down the textures for gameplay smoothness. . .like Headcrab said. . .they prolly had monster rigs running that. . .

Isn't it a different build of the game? Like, before it got stolen?

What year is that E3 video from?

Also, games always look different when they're recorded with a video camera. I remember those huge 600MB videos with gabe walking us through the source engine and it looked better than in-game somehow...

E3 is non existent now fyi. isnt it just GDC(game developers conference) now?

so if i record me playing half-life1 with my digital camera at 240x480 resolution, will it look better than gears? [/joke]

Well...it's hard to explain.

You can't really tell how much detail there is/isn't when viewing a game through the camera, and the way the camera sees light from a computer monitor can make a game's lighting actually look better...almost an HDR-ish effect.

I noticed this most in the old E3 demonstrations

Valve does alot of refining of their stuff before they consider it 'just right'. In the E3 screenshot, the wheel axle is obviously way too large. The final version has the correct proportions to the rest of the car.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but the in-game screenshot seems to have low quality settings, which presumably may be lowering the model texture/geometry detail of the car.

I did screenshots in medium and low settings, check it please and you will see that there is a little difference between high and medium, a Big difference between low and High which is pretty normal.

BUT, in the E3 video it just look amazing, I quess that they have completely changed the game, I will upload more screens at the beginning of this scene and you will see more!

I hope that somebody can help me, maybe some of the developers in person, that I can bring the game in a gorgeous quality as seen in the E3 video!

It wasn't any better quality jeez! It was just different here and there.

And stop attaching super compressed images, use something like www.imageshack.us!!

the upload of the file (5,2 mb) takes so long, i have XDSL

Um, maybe they just decided to change the models of the cars? A video from a game from BEFORE it's released is not really the same as the released game...

Some people...

yeah I also think about that, but it looks like if you look at the cars, that there are textures missing, or does the game look better at ATI video cards?

no -_-

Your half-life 2 is just the way it should be and you've no reason to change it.

ati or nvidia cards wont show different textures....nor do they show different graphical aspects unless your talking about the the fx series vs the 9 series.

Trying to judge image quality is completely impossible when you're compressing JPEGs to a point where they completely destroy the original visual detail of the game that is actually being outputted to your monitor.

I'm sure they put the highest res textures in the game for E3, then decided to change it up for performance issues...

That's probably what they did, and it sucks. When you see a presentation of a game you expect to get the same graphics quality in the finished game not lower quality because of some performance issues:frown: .

It's exactly what they did with the dynamic destructible objects, which in the finished game were replaced by scripted destructible objects:hmph:

My point is simply this: if YOU KNOW that current hardware can't run the game with all the graphics and stuff at a reasonable frame rate, then why the hell do you show it that way at an expo when you're going to remove it in the final product anyway:rolleyes:

Well... After all this, I just have two things to ask.

1. Why are you bugging out over the wheel of a car body that A. you wouldn't be able to drive in rl, and B. that you spend less than a second looking at in the game?

2. What graphic settings are you running on, and if it's high, then 1 again.

:D?

On certain levels, like in the cities and such where the cars are pretty popular, it might have been a performance hog or something. They more than likely trimmed down the parts of the game that weren't needed to be pretty to save performance. I'm not worried, since I won't ever truely notice it...but I am still saddened by the destructible objects :(

You know what? I'm launching a new campaign. The "Valve, make everything in game destructible to an extent." VMEIGDTAE. I want to pick doors off cars with the gravity gun. I want to smack pages out of a book with my crowbar. I WANT TO BLOW UP A WALL WITH 400 GRENADES!!!!

^ I would like that too. However in Ep2 despite the "cinematic physics" I doubt will be seeing anything like that.

Destructable objects, you say? Is that still in the SDK?

Well then if that's what you're looking for, I suggest you download this destructable house for G-Mod. Go ahead and derive your pleasure from seeing a house be blown to a million pieces of wood and glass ya sick bastard! (Sorry about my post being off-topic).

hi guys

thanks to all of you for the big replys or (replies)

I am to 100% sure, that they pulled down the textures to avoid perfomance issues to most of the people who bought HL2!

Now I have Core 2 Duo 6600, Geforce 8800 GTS 640 AND I WANT TO PLAY HL2 like in E3, Valve TEAM can you hear me(lol)

Hah, sucker, Valve has to compensate for everyone, not just you fancy gamers with the big guns.

ya but then why dont they add it as a high end feature in the first place........i mean they have low-med-high. they could well enough compensate for others with a different texture.....

Why isn't there an ultra-hard mode? *shrugs*

There's going to be a big graphics update eventually, after Episode 2 comes out. Be patient.
