Half-Life 2 Menu Won't Load

Ok get this:

I've installed the game on Steam and just loaded it on my 64-bit Vista system when nothing happens; yes, nothing happens. The blurry menu screen loads but the actual menu does not. There is a black box on the lower right hand corner of the screen telling me "Loading..." and on the to right another box saying "64-bit mode active" but that's it; just the blurry menu screen and no other options.

I have all the latest drivers installed and these are my specs; PLEASE HELP!!!

Vista 64-bit SP1
4GB
8800 GTS 640MB
Core 2 Duo

Have you tried running the game as administrator?

Yes I have but still the menu will not load... please don't tell me I should reformat... (it wasn't like this LAST reformat)...
