Half Life 2 Multiplayer Problem

My grandson and I have been playing HL2 online and there's an issue we can't figure out. I set up the server and he can join any "regular" HL2 maps but can't play Episode 1 and Episode 2. He comes into the game for about 30 seconds and then gets an error message that he doesn't have Episode 1 or 2 and then gets bumped out. On single player he has played through Episode 1 and 2 so he most definitely has the game.

We haven't been playing multiplayer long and are still learning but are having so much fun!

Are both of you running the game through Steam? Do both of you have HL2, Ep1 and Ep2 on Steam?

What do you mean, playing HL2 online? There is no online component to Half Life 2 - Half Life 2: Deathmatch is a standalone game.
