He was making a joke..

I don't know why everyone here is laughing at Starshipstroopers when Valve actually copied the concepts of them for ant lions. Infact, very few Halflife2 concepts are original. I can pritty much tell u that for a fact since I know more of them and where they come from:

Anti-Lion: Starshiptroopers
Strider: (can't remember the name. but its a very popular film made from a book in 1960's, I think its called 'When the Earth Stood Still')
Mech things: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Stalkers: (can't remmber the name, but it was an old horror film)

I'm not very good with names, but resaerch it your self. Hardly any Halflife2 concepts are original and pritty much of them copy very popular films and books.

Mech things? Stalkers? What are those? :|

And, congrats. Show me a game that's had an "original" monster within the past 5 years.

Loads of games have original monster and enemy concepts. I really cba to actually find any. If you disagree with me fair enough. But I seriously do think Halflife2 is unoriginal as a concept and apearance. But then again it will hopfully bring something new to the term 'Playing a game'.

I know what things you're talking about, but IchI, I don't think they've been officially announced yet :\

You've failed to point out a game that has an original monster. You "can't be arsed" to find one, or you can't think of one? I'd say you're generally leaning toward the latter.

I know of the second one, but what in the world is a "mech thing?" You can enlighten me in a PM if you want..

I'm not covering anything ...man, come on guys ...it was obvioulsy a joke ..how can anyone miss the big "Starship Troopers screenshot" blurb?

For the record:
Striders are heavily borrowed from War of the Worlds. The Day the Earth Stood Still, as great as it is, only had a giant humanoid robot.
As for the combine/biomechanical devices, FF:SW itself borrowed heavily from much earlier sources of science fiction. Those ideas have all been out there in the mainstream for quite some time.

War of the Worlds is the one. Soz I was getting my names mixed up. They are not the same as in the film. But If I'm correct they have 3 legs and pritty much apear except like a strider in the books.

As I said before, I cba to find any original concepts and if you disagree fair enough Simple as. I think Halflife2 lacks original concepts, the end.

I never argued that HL2's monsters aren't original concepts. But, who cares, really? All I want you to do is point out a game with an original concept for a monster. All you're showing me is that you can't, because there hasn't been a truly original monster in a game in.. years.

Its doesn't matter what it is, its how you use it.

It would be difficult to come up with an original monster/machine/thing after so many years of human creativity, that is supposed to on some level fit into the real world.

I would disagree.

Okay then. Point one out. You've had TONS of time to even think up *ONE* monster.. so, take a whack at it.

Vortigaunt.

?

err.. lol, that's HL/2, we're talking about a game other than HL/2, 'cause his complaint is VALVe has no original concepts for monsters. Besides, Vortigaunt is nothing other than an alien.

an original monster in a game ehh...

well, let's see; the things in stalker than have psychic abilities, and use like floor tiles and tables and chairs against you, haven't seen stuff like that in any game

ohhh, what's this?

has sai won shuzer's little question contest???

....go me!

Have seen monsters like that in games before.

ANd that monster is more about could it of been done 5 years ago?

There's actually a psychic monster in Doom 3 that throws objects at you.. try again :) Besides, a psychic generic looking monster isn't exactly original, is it?

Starship Troopers will (hopefully) be a good game. BTW wtf is the point of this thread?

Damn it!

alright i was trying really really hard to think of atleat one thing you couldn't turn around....but i faile...

Shuzer: 1
Sai: 0

i hope your satisfied :(

Ok, you still don't get my point. Its my opinion. I seriously couldn't give a shit whats games have and havn't got original cocnepts except Halflife2. I bought up this point because people where in a way moking Starshiptroopers.

I am open your challenge though, my entry would be Trangle Head from Silent Hill 2. I would like you to prove me wrong.

Another on would be the light combine soliders from Halo.

I agree with SHuzer that it is almost impossible to come up with an original monster for a game these days but c'mon......the antlion models in Half-Life 2 are so ridiculously close to the bug designs in Starship Troopers its embarassing. I really wish Valve had spent a little more time and come up with something a little less blatantly ripped-off.

Not many games in the past 5 years have made original monsters but define original...is a Ferrari Enzo original because its a car? nope...its a car yeah but it isnt a Vauxhall Corsa, its a Ferrari Enzo with its own unique-ness. FarCry's Trigens were original because no other game has trigens in them simple. HL2's antlion's are a rip-off though ..they merely changed the color of them and added very little else to them. At least other games actually change the monster's looks and make them seem less "copied".

Stalker has original monsters. They are as close as my imagination can get to what a monster would look like. Its like alien's...we all think of an alien as something with a long face, oval shaped and big eyes, the same as when i think of a monster STALKERS come very close to what i think a monster would look like.

Um... the only resemblance I see is the legs, and even they have a different arrangement. The SST bugs look like giant staple removers on legs. The Antlions look more like a cross between a beetle, a praying mantis and a moth. And they can jump around. And dig in the heat of battle. And the player can control them with pheromone spores.

Strider: (can't remember the name. but its a very popular film made from a book in 1960's, I think its called 'When the Earth Stood Still')

Nope. It was called "War of the Worlds", and the movie made in the 1960's was only really loosely based on it. The aliens in the movie looked nothing like the ones in the book, and the movie's War Machines had no legs, and looked nothing like the Striders. If the Striders were inspired by WotW, I'd have to say it was more from the artwork of that musical version that was done a while back. Three legged alien walkers are fairly common in literature, though. Ever read "The Tripods"?

Mech things: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

You better be referring to the Combine soldiers in Power Armour that some of the previews talk about...

Stalkers: (can't remmber the name, but it was an old horror film)

And as for this, I hope you mean the Prowlers...

I'm not very good with names, but resaerch it your self. Hardly any Halflife2 concepts are original and pritty much of them copy very popular films and books.

Never seen anything like the Gunship before. Flying manatees seem rather imaginative. I'd certainly never have thought of them.

Oh, and the only place I feel they could have gotten the Rollermines from was an old UFO report I've read where some guy was abducted by giant spiky golfballs. And nobody I speak to seems to have heard of it...

I'm sure there'll be many more new and original things in the final game. Just look at HL. Giant bladed tentacle-creatures. Creatures that are half chicken (or something) and half squid. Nasty little creatures that hang from the ceiling and pull you up to be eaten. A bulletproof giant with flamethrower arms and a seismic stomp. A giant floating baby!

Almost anything that's created can bear a resemblance to something already around, but that doesn't mean it's the same thing, or unoriginal... an apple isn't a ripoff of a lime, just because they're the same colour...

Well, Brian saved me the trouble of making a huge post. Just re-read what he said. :)

It really annoys me when people say valve ripped off starship trooper's bugs.
Like Brian said, their behaviour and especially their physiology are quite different. Even their colouration is different.

The only common elements are that they are insectoids with spike-feet.

It's like saying that horses ripped off cows because they are both mammals and both have hooves.
