Gamespot never claimed the game would come out today. They are not wrong, you just have no idea what you're talking about! Wow, as humans we give each other WAY too much credit! It’s amazing how many stupid, rude, oblivious, unobservant, slow people there are in the world... I've seen maybe 50 threads about Half-Life 2 coming out later today because people don't take 30 seconds to read a bit about what the countdown on www.gamespot.com means but they log-in to their favorite game related forum to either ask about or proclaim that Half-Life 2 is coming out later today. I don't mean to single out any one person but after a while it really starts to get ridiculous.

Sorry to rant, I realize not everyone here thinks the game is coming today but there have been enough threads about it that I think this should be a Sticky for the day.

Yes, the official release was November 16th not the 12th......

Exactly right, it has been and always will be November 16th 2004! Just a few days and we'll all have Half-Life 2 between this and Halo 2 this has got to be the best month for videogames in a long time!

GTA san andreas was released not too long ago too.

and with RTW also released id say that Fall 2004 was the best so far.

dont forget world of warcraft and vampire bloodlines

Can any mods around to make this a sticky for the day? Can you also add that the rumors of Half-Life 2 being released early because several retailers sold the game before the Street date are false? Valve will not be releasing the game early just because a few people bought a retail copy, they still can't play it because it must be registered with Steam first. They have been planning on a world wide simultaneous release and it will be released only November 16th 2004 at 12:01 PST.

Why? We know its November 16th release date, just some people can't understand it, too bad for them.

Because those people that don't understand it come and make tons of threads asking about it...

Wierd.. i always thought it was on the 16th.. the waiting has turned some of the fans MAD, MAD I SAY!

If you read my first post, I describe why some people think it's coming out today. I don't understand why they think that but its been going on all day.

According to the Geamspot's countdown counter, there are about only 4 hours left

/me slaps head

I thought we had some kind of intelligence on this board, all hope has now diminished.

I think this guy read the other thread and pressed NEW THREAD instead of REPLY. whats coming out today on Gamespot is the article not the game.

You must be one of these. If you took the thirty seconds you mentioned, and would actually notice, HL2 comes out the 16th, as it has been for 4 weeks.

Retail HL2'ers cannot play HL2 either. They have to wait, just like everyone else.

Gamespot is going to be molested when the article launches. Let's see if we can crash the servers :p

I have not read one thread or post saying HL2 will be out today lol?

I KNOW IT COMES OUT THE 16th DAMMIT! How did you not read and understand my post!? I KNOW WHEN IT COMES OUT!!!! I'm trying to let people know the meaning of the countdown is for article "The Final Hours of Half-Life 2" not the game coming out. Maybe you should have read my post more carefully people.

So to recap: Gamespots article on the making of Half-Life 2 titled "The Final Hours of Half-Life 2" comes out today at 3:30PST and 6:30 EST. The countdown on their website is for the release of the Article mentioned above NOT the release of the game as many in this and other forums have posted about. I just made the thread to clarify that and people still don't know whats going on. My other post a bit further down the first page talks about Shacknews rumors about Valve releasing the game early because some stores sold it to people early. Because you have to authenticate the game online using Steam, the people who purchased the game in stores cannot play it anyway so there is no reason for Valve to just let everyone play it, by releasing the game early. Valve have made a big effort to get a WORLDWIDE release on November 16th 2004 they are not going to release it early. I KNOW all this information, I'm posting for those who were confused about the count-down on gamespot's website and for those wondering if the game was going to be released early for whatever reason.

Valve has two reasons to release early:

A. To avoid all of the headaches resulting from the retail customers who want to know why their game isn't working. The last thing valve wants to do is anger the people who bought their game.

B. To make more money from steam sales (assuming VU lets them unlock it), as all the retail buyers who want to have HL2 now(if their store doesnt have the game yet) will switch over to steam.

Also, its not proper forum etiquette to ask to sticky your own post.

I think those that got Half-Life 2 early know when it was really supposed to be released, if people don't know what Half-Life 2 is bought the game early I'd be highly surprised, it was more likely people like us, that have been waiting since September 30th 2003 to play Half-Life 2 and then saw it in stores and was like "Hell yeah” I’m going to buy it before they realize its not supposed to be out till the 16th! Those really in the know would also realize you can't play it until you activate it over Steam anyway.

And about the forum etiquette, you're right but I was trying to be helpful without posting in 6 individual threads the same answer to the same question.

While I agree that many of the people who got it early knew about the release, you'd probably be surprised how many people just pick up games on a whim at their local Wal-Mart. Not every fan of Half-Life reads the forums every day, you know.

haha, think about the dude, who bought it, sooo happy to have it, installs it, only to realise that he can't play the damn game.
 poor guy. ;)

LOL Yeah I guess some people might have picked it up without knowing too much about it... They are certainly going to go to Customer Service at Wal-Mart and tell them "My game is broken” That ought to be a fun conversation to hear, Customer Service at Wal-Mart and a consumer who bought Half-Life 2 on whim but doesn't know much about it :)
