Half Life 2 Not Loading

I just bought the game maybe a week ago got it installed any everything. I am able to play Garrys Mod 9 but when I try to load the first level of Half Life 2 it loads maybe 17 bars and stays there forever Can anyone suggest a solution please. I would best appreciate it and I also have all the system requirements for the game. :x
