Okay, I recently bought the Orange Box and for the past few days I have been enjoying it immensely. However, this morning when I tried to get back on the original Half Life 2, the game preped for launch, gave me the generic game-is-starting-up black screen, but then it never completed the launch, sending me back to my desktop without so much as an error box. The weird thing is, yesterday the game was working just fine and I exited the game normally. I have tried renstalling the game and pretty much everything I can think of short of consulting text support. Can you please tell me what I can do to continue playing Half Life 2?

Oh... its not that my pc doesn't meet the reqirements... like I said, I did play it yesterday... but if you do need them:

Windows XP 2002 Home Edition
Dell Dimension DXP051 Intel Pentium Processor w/ 3.20 GHz
2 gigs RAM
Cheaper 512 MB graphics card (can't remember what it is exactly)

Have you tried deleting clientregistry.blob and restarting Steam? Sometimes that works.

Thank you for the time you gave to offer me advice tho

Is your GPU a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT by any chance?

I`m getting this problem now too, all the new source engine games work fine, but the original HL2 crashes when loading a new level without fail, which is really pissing me off now as I want to go back and play them all again in order.

I`ve got Windows XP and a Geforce 8600GTS.

I`ve tried verifying the files, and re-downloading.

It`s got to be some sort of bug that`s snuck it`s way through.

Same Problem Here

I am having the same issue only it goes a step further.

Let me explain.

Step 1. - I load up steam, I launch Half Life 2.

Step 2. - A pop up window appreas and claims that my drivers are outdated. So I verify that I do indeed have the latest drivers from Nvidia and I attempt to launch it again. It gives me the same warning.
I ignore it and continue anyways.

Step 3. - Preparing to launch.

Step 4. - I am taken to a black screen where my hour glass icon appears then within 5 seconds or so my PC freezes and has even rebooted on its own.

I have tried deleting my game and redownloading it again from Steam and the same thing occurs.

Funny thing is all my other games including Half Life 2 Deathmatch, Counterstrike, TF2, Portal, etc work just fine.

The only games that cause this problem are Half Life 2 and Half Life 1 Source.

I have been playing HL2 through Steam since it launched in 2004 without a problem. Same Computer. Any ideas? Below are my specs.

AMD Athlon 64
2.40 GHz 1G Ram
Windows XP
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT
Nvidia Drivers: 6.14.11.6921

File verification didn't work... and no... I said it was a "cheap" 512 GPU, as in $50, as in the Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS :\. Anyway, back to the problem with the game, maybe I could uninstall steam and all of its components and then trade my old orange box for a new one at the retailer and try to reinstall it again. Do you think that will solve the problem? Frankly, I'm starting to think that my existing HL2 file is a lost cause.

Umm, I wouldnt think of it as a lost cause.

The way I look at it, we paid Steam Valve for Half Life 2 and our systems meet the requirements and all their other games work perfectly. If all of a sudden HL2 is not working, then theyre may be a bug that they should look into and perhaps release a patch to fix it because apparently more than one of us are having the same issue.

I just hope someone has been able to overcome this and can help us or tha Steam will make a note of it on their website soon.

There have been loads of issues with Steam and Half-Life 2. Most of the major issues have already been fixed, and Valve won't fix much more, I'm afraid.
Also, Homicidal, If you have already registered the OB to your account it is tied and just uninstalling will not take off the Key, so it's not sellable, unfortunately.

Try using these launch parameters:

+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 -autoconfig +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1

crashes during first level?

hey, just bought the orange box this morning. When i start up Half life 2 it runs right, HOWEVER after i talk to the guy (don't know his name) dressed up as a guard, the game boots me to desktop. To be more precise on where this happens, after you jump out the window, there is a door to your right. i get stuck at the loading screen beyond the door.

Seems this problem is something to do with loading, is a recently added problem or conflict, and upon looking around the internets, is quite common lately.

Just to clear something up, I have no-steam backups of every game I buy that requires steam to run (my kind of backup plan if you will), and today I thought I`d try out the no-steam HL2 see if it has the same error as the retail.

Now, bare in mind this is an older engine build than the one on steam, and both did work perfectly until the last couple of days, but they both crash at the loading sections now, which leads to to believe the game is conflicting with something on my machine, but, to my knowledge, the only thing I have installed lately are games.

The weird thing is, all the recent source games run fine (Portal, TF2, and Ep2) which gives me some hope as to when they get around to adding the new effects to HL2 the problems will be fixed.

I just wish Valve would let us know they are aware of the problem.

Wow!!! The launch perameters you gave me worked!!! The game is now playable! Thank you so much!!! :D:D:D:D

Finally, I feel like our problems are understood. Sure feels good to know that I'm not the only one. I guess I wasted the past 3 hours backing up my saved games, nuking steam, re installing steam, and downloading HL2 again cuz chances are it won't work anyways.

But I agree, I wish Valve would let us know they are aware of the problem and working on a fix.

Right, I`ve got it working again (well, so far).

Before, when I deactivated AVG while testing for confliction, i did by exiting the security center and ending all AvG processes, it appears this was not enough.

Today I fully uninstalled AvG 7.5, loaded up HL2, and the level it would not get passed before loaded up straight away, then the level afterwards loaded right away as well.

It appears to be down to AvG 7.5 free edition.

Does anybody know any other decent free anti-virus programs I can replace it with until either AvG or Valve fix it?

Well guess what?

I got Half Life 2 to work.

How did I do it?

Well I decided to re install my previous drivers again instead of going with Nvidia's latest ones.

I remembered the only reason I installed the new drivers from Dec 19th 2007 was because Steam mentioned that my drivers were outdated.

And ever since I installed them, HL2 and HL1 stopped working.

Luckily these drivers are from October 2007 so theyre not THAT old but I dont think I should be using old drivers anyways.

I sure hope Steam fixes this bug soon.

Any luck guys?

Ok, I'm having a similar problem here...I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook with a dual core 1.66 GHz processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics card and Windows Vista Home Basic. I can't even get Team Fortress to start without the APPCRASH error in the hl2.exe file. I can start Half Life 2 as well but I get the IDirect3DDevice9::Present() when I try to enter the first level. I know I have the most up to date drivers and I've attempted starting both applications in directX 8.0 niether of which have worked. Anyone have any ideas?

Similar problem with HL2 Episode 1: It does not load at all. I just get the Windoze error message "Half-Life 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close..." The details mentions the file rapidx9.dll. I have checked for all the latest driver updates, game updates, DX9 etc. HL2, Lost Coast, Substance Gold all run OK. My system: Win XP + SP2; Athlon x2 4200+; 2GB RAM; GeForce 5700GS.
