Rumor Control: MIA Xbox Half-Life 2 and "The Gamer's Virus"

PSP prototypes, Pokemon patches, and another Xbox price-cut round out the week's whisperings.

RUMOR #1: The Xbox version of Half-Life 2 has been cancelled.

Source: Gamers whose pre-orders had been nixed by EB Games.

The official story: "EB Games does not have any additional information on the status of Half-Life 2 for Xbox. As our pre-order information was speculative, we decided to cease accepting pre-orders."--An EB Games Spokesperson.

What we heard: After receiving e-mails from alarmed gamers, GameSpot contacted Valve, VU Games, and EB Games about the status of the Xbox version of Half-Life 2. What we got were a variety of responses: Valve said that while it had plans to eventually bring the game to multiple consoles, right now it was "concentrating on getting the PC version done." VU would only say that the Xbox HL2's status had not changed since last June, when a VU spokesperson re-confirmed Gabe Newell's comments that a version was being developed for the Microsoft console. As for EB, they issued the above statement. So what does all that mean? Basically, that the PC version of Half-Life 2 is so far off, a console port is no longer even on its developer's, publisher's, or retailer's radar.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus. Half-Life 2 will eventually come to the Xbox. However, when--and in what form--is still very much in flux.

That doesn't mean anything, just sounds liek gamespot is making stuff up. Like that HL2 is so far off they canceled pre-orders for the xbox version.

A sept 30 2004 release isn't looking so far fetched anymore.

Valve ALWAYS said that the XBox version of HL2 would be released "some time after" the PC version...to my knowledge they NEVER gave even a speculative release date for anything but the PC version. I don't see how this changes anything for the PC release.

I once looked at Amazon.ca's ETA for HL2 on XBox.. they had an ETA of 2010, was funny

Anyway, aside from amazon not knowing anything, I can't see the XBox being the console of choice for HL2. I mean, the PS2 can barely handle HL1.. :|

You can't see the xbox being the console of choice? Which console would be then?

Rumors mean very little. I would take anything like this with a very large grain of salt.

Consoles vs PC are very different and Valve clearly is more "into" the PC version of HL2. If HL2 comes out for xbox (or whatever) 5 years from now, it really doesn't mean the PC version is automatically going to come out 4 years from now.

The way consoles get better and better through the years, with online capabillites and such, they're soon going to basicly be computers that need a TV instead of a moniter

TVs are getting better too, soon they will be PCs that just play games :p

wtf is going on???, wheres the truth, theres enough deceit flying around at the moment.

Exactly. Saying that the XBox version is very far off has nothing to do with the PC game. You have to also remember that with all the Half-Life 2 delays, there hasn't been much said about the XBox version, so it is possible that EB games. They are probally just stopping the preorders until the PC version of Half-Life 2 is out or at least close.

It's already delay from sept '03 to feb '04 to march '04 to June '04 and now sept '04. Can anyone accept me see the pattern here.

It's sad, I'm beginning to loose interest in HL2. A year ago was a different story, but now? Can't Valve, perhaps give us a teeny window of a release date? I feel like I'm getting shafted.

Let's all be a little patient, here, people. I mean, Valve didn't do a Duke Nukem Forever, announcing they were working on the game as soon as development started and giving the release date as "when it's done." They started development over 5 years ago, wisely saying absolutely nothing to the media or the fans until they approached their expected release date (rememer that, only a year ago, HL2 was nothing but rumor and speculation...Valve had yet to even admit that they were WORKING on it). A few setbacks at then end of the development have kicked back the release date...not exactly an unheard-of thing in game development.

I'm as anxious for the release of HL2 as anybody else (and just as disappointed that it didn't make it;s original release date), but I'm not gonna hound and belittle Valve because of a few delays. They've played it straight with the fans so far, IMHO.

Not having Half-Life 2 in 2003 may have changed a lot of people's enthusiasm on Half-Life 2 and thats mine included. One thing though is that when Half-Life 2 finally does come out, we may not forget what happened as far as the delays and things, but we certaintly won't care as much. I don't think the delays will hurt sales of Half-Life 2 significantly if at all and that is probally why Valve choose to make a game with more quality and wait it out. Sure it has already been 4 months since it was supposed to be out, and it looks like it will be at least another 4 months and probally more, but the final product will be worth it. Have faith.

I just wish that they'd tell us something. Even "the game is 90% done but we've had some trouble with the engine and seriously and realistically we're talking Christmas 2004" would be a date. This living in the dark is very depressing.

I do agree with you Andy on that. I would like a weekly or even monthly update as to how they feel the entire project is coming along so when a delay comes, it won't be so suprising and angering because we have seen the trend. Also, we can get some idea as to how much has been done because I for one feels that they haven't actually done that much since Sept. 30, 2003 when it was supposed to be out.

Yes...and how exactly is what they did any better? At least with Duke Nukem Forever we were never waiting for it's release right up to the week before getting ANY information at all. And at least with Duke Nukem Forever, they didn't stay quiet on it then reveal it and say "Oh guess what guys!!! 5 months to go!" And then have it delayed a freakin year. I'd rather a company take the Id approach like Doom 3, the "when it's done" approach, over Valve's attempt, on which you can see they fell flat on their face with.

And what would you say if Valve took the DNF approach, making the announcement when they started development, and then CANCELLED the game some 5 years later (as I suspect that 3D Realms would like to do with DNF but CAN'T because they let their mouthes dig them into a hole with their fans)? I suspect that we'd be hearing people complain about THAT, too!

Time to be honest about this. Valve (and every other software company on the face of the planet) ONLY announces it's products prior to their release to garner interest and, when the time comes, INCREASE SALES. Being a fan of a game series does not give you, me, or anybody else the "right" to have one single little bit of information about that game before the company chooses to release it. Put things in perspective here...this isn't some personal vendetta against you as an individual by Valve and it isn't some giant conspiracy...IT'S A DELAY OF A FEW OF MONTHS ON A FRICKIN' COMPUTER GAME!

If you're so angry about what so many people think is an "intentional delay" and want to send Valve a message, don't buy HL2 when it comes out (if the delay WAS intentional and it costs them money because people are pissed about it, then they won't do it again...as I suspect 3D Realms will learn with DNF). Otherwise, stop whining about it.

You are reading into my reply too much. I'm not angry at Valve. Annoyed a little, yes. But I'm not one of the people running around acting like the delay of Half-Life 2 raped my mother and killed my pets. I replied to your message because it seems like you were trying to say Valve handled the release well, which they most certainly did not. I'm just saying, yes I would rather have the DNF or Doom3 approach because at least then there isn't all these people getting their hopes up right up until the very day it's supposed to be released. Then again, there's people that think it's hitting in the next 2 or 3 months, so I guess there will always be people blindly hoping in the face of all common sense that it will come out "2 months from now" all the time.

I think that Valve has handled the release of HL2 at least as well as ID has for Doom 3 (it was recently delayed, also), and much better then 3D Realms has for DNF (MIA for, what, SIX years or so?).

I'd rather hear complaining about delays for 3 months around here than 6 years of "when's it gonna be done?"
