Half Life 2 Sound Problem

For some reason I just installed Half Life 2 and upon starting a new file I came across Dr. Breen's introduction screen void of sound. Not only is it Dr. Breen, but it seems as though every screen is failing to output the sound of the characters displayed in them. The Eli and Kliener screens aren't making any sounds either. I'm hoping there is an easy fix to this, as the sound files are all there.

All of the other sounds/voices are working properly, however screens containing characters with moving lips aren't outputting any sound at all. PLeEZe HLP!?!

Indeed, how do you know? Are there any error messages in the console?

Also check your options menu, look under sound and make sure sliders aren't at the bottom and the correct details are shown.

Also, as already said. Validate your HL2 files. Right click Hl2, properties, files, validate integrity of game cache.

yeah, all the files are there. it's just that the screens aren't displaying sound for some reason. I have the same exact copy of the game on my laptop (Vista), but for some reason the same game won't display the sound of people behind screens on my PC (XP).

open your console during those times and tell us if you see messages like "missing file: sounds/breen_speech1" or something

non-steam, but it works perfect on my laptop so I don't know what the issue could be on a PC.
