Half Life 2 Unlocked - 25 hours of downloading left???

I very carefully planned today so that I could play Half Life 2 as soon as possible. Unfortunately it looks like I'm royally ****ed.

Basically, I made sure to get all of the preload files from a friend & setup an account (I have 28.8k internet). The files were up to date last night. Well, I get on steam after 12:00 and it unlocks Half Life 2 (after about 6 MB of downloading who knows what, according to my firewall)....and then I get offline and try to play. Hmmmm.... It won't play until I freaking update the game.

So I get back on steam and guess what it tells me. I have 1500 minutes of downloading (about 150MB) left. Look, I love valve & really want to buy off of steam so VALVE, not VIVENDI, gets my money, but this is becomming a huge pain in the ass.

Am I just royally ****ed?

You probably are "royally ****ed". Maybe you should have gotten the retail version. Here's an idea: Get your friend to unlock the game and update it fully. Backup the complete files and put them on your computer. That should shave off a lot of waiting time.

Yeah....I was thinking of dragging my harddrive to his place in a couple hours (Assuming he's awake). He goes to a college where they have a curfew (YIKES!!!)....so I can't go over there just yet.
