Half-Life 2 will not run.

Hi, I'm new here, but I have a problem.
I bought HL2 off the Steam Server quite some time ago. I installed it on my new laptop, and the game will simply not run. I can see the New Game, Load Game, Options menus, but the background remains blurry. I click new game, and all the save file images are white (cannot remember if that's normal or not).
Midway through the loading screen, I see an operation terminated error message. One other time, the game never even got to the loading bar; it went black, then gave me a vertex error, or something to that effect.
This laptop can play WoW perfectly well, so I should think that it would play HL2.

I have a WinXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D630. If you need any other info, I'll be happy to post it. Please; I really wanna play this game again

What are your specs? You're running off of integrated graphics. Is that right?

Actually, I've isolated the problem.
I had to manually change the preferences to make it run in DirectX 8.0, and the game ran perfectly fine.
Might wanna leave the thread up, though, so that other people can get an idea if they have this problem too. I guess. I dunno; it's late, and I'm hungry.
