I know there have been threads already about anticipation of the 3rd Half Life!! But if the HL2 story proves strong and fans interests stay high, how far do you see the series going? Doom is only on 3! And its been out alot longer than Half Life. But this is also because Carmack works on other projects. But honestly, I see the game going to Half Life 4. And thats it.

This isnt fantasizing about the graphics, or the story. It's about what we have now, and predicting how far Valve will ride the Half Life wave.

Whatchall think?

How far?

I suspect they would stop after 3 is finished, sure there could be demand for more but I think Valve would want to start something new.

To HL3...they already told us its a trilogy.

Quake is hardly a trilogy, there's no continuity between the first 2 and there's no real story in the third one!

But ID didnt have a trilogy wrote out for quake like Valve have got for half life. So if they already have the story on paper for HL3 then they must have an ending on that 3rd part no?

A trilogy seems fair to me, anymore just seems a bit like overkill at this point.

Right, but they said the 3rd would be the final.

They also said it would be out on sept 30 2003...

Companies change thier minds and contradict themselves so ofter it's not even funny. Look at Alien. They decided to do 3. They really finished the story at the 3rd one and killed ripley. Then someone though let's do a forth one anyway...

i'd be surprised if there was a hl4, they'll probably move onto new projects.

So the question then becomes, do you see Valve sticking with FPS, or moving into other genres?

It would be nice to see Valve branching out from the FPS genre. They have an obvious liking towards narration and characters, so I assume an adventure game would suit them well.

Going beyond a trilogy is usually death in terms of quality. Need I remind anyone of Star Wars prequels or Alien: Resurrection? Lethal Weapon 4 was an exception. I love that series.

So are you having Quake 4 doubts? Is Carmack leading that project anyways? Whats his involvement?

Ewww adventure... make it RPG...

I don't think Carmack is involved in Q4; I was under the impression his next project is a new property. As for the Quake series itself, I think they all suck. Not enough intelligence in those games to pique my interest. Nice engines though.

I could go with either adventure or RPG. The Longest Journey was one of the most fascinating games I have ever played.

Possible Chapters:
1. Oversleep
2. Unforseen Pop Quiz
3. We've Got Jocks! (Are there jocks at MIT? :) )
4. Mosh Pit (Hey, I'm sure Gordon didn't spend ALL of his time studying)
5. Questionable Ethics in Test Taking

Where did you read this? Link plz.

Oh and remember people. Im sure there will be expansions. (blue shift, Opf) etc

raziel, gabe said it in an interview. HL was always intended to be a trilogy. dont have a link soz.

The only thing the Quake games have in common is Id software and the quake symbol, it's not like half-life with a continuing story. I think half-life will be done after 3. It's not like Valve are a bunch of feckless movie producers that can't think of anything original so resort to remakes, sequels and comic book crossovers.

Idea: Half-life 4 released as comic/anime/cg movie

I also heard HL3 was going to be the last. It'll prob be a while before we see that game anyway.

i dont think carmack is involved, its raven whos doing it i think. the game carries on where quake 2 left off. i cant even remember how quake 2 ended tbh.

...and before we go worrying about half life 3, lets concentrate on hl2

wonder if hl2 will have something similar to opposing force, where you swap places and are the combine. might be cool.

anyway, hl is a trilogy. forget hl4 and 5. soz guys.

i agree with what most people have said, i think after the 3rd game it would be milking the Half Life story to go any further. a trilogy is always nice :)

We won't see HL3 till 2010 so don't get your hopes up.

id like a trilogy. after the third while anticipation is still high, id like them to start a new project.

Adventure games are amazing. But I can't see Valve doing it. Nor can I see them doing RPG, like proper RPG, or an RTS.
Who knows? I have a feeling they'll either stick to their guns - games companies usually do - and create a new series of FPS or perhaps a RPG/FPS similarly to Deus Ex.

I'd much rather they stopped the HL franchaise, and began work on a new game. A company with talent like Valve could produce some wonderful software. Not all of us just want to shoot things.

If this is the case, then HL3 better damn well have a happy ending!!!

You hear me, VALVe?

The screen should go dark for credits ONLY after Alyx turns out the lights in the bedroom,.. you dig?

Actually, on the Quake-series thing: Quake 4 actually does have a story. It takes place a few hours after Quake 2, so the storyline is now: Q1, Q2 and Q4. Q3 doesn't count because it was just deathmatch and stuff. :)
