Half-Life 3 leaked!

[22/03/04 16:21]
Or its eventual existence at least, according to loose-lipped Swedes

Swedish mag Gamereactor has broken cover (and, it appears, its non-disclosure agreement) by claiming that Valve CEO Gabe Newell revealed that Half-Life 3 is in the planning stage at the Seattle developers.

Speaking during a recent press briefing at Valve HQ, Newell is said to have revealed that, at this stage, the company envisage Half-Life 2 female NPC Alyx as playable in Half-Life 3, and promised more alien-based revelations.

While it's no great surprise that the series will continue, Valve and publishers Vivendi can't be too impressed that Half-Life 3 appears to have been confirmed before they've even managed to get 2 into the shops. Expect much more confirmed info in the build up to this year's E3.

...........

Take Care.

meh I wouldnt even begin to get hyped.

Its going to be years before we see anymore HL.

Some Swedish game mag... I dunno. If it's anything, it's probably just an expansion, but I ain't gettin hyped yet. Most likely just plain fiction going through some rumour mill.

This is old guys. Before this year's E3. See the date also.

We were already told about this. Nothing new.

didnt gabe say in that gamespot article that they wouldn't start working on hl3 for a while to give themselves a break?

Well, it's obvious that there will be a HL3 anyway. I will also bet that it's playable as Gordon. If Alyx is playable, it will be a HL2 expansion.

I love Alyx and all, but please god don't make me play anyone but GORDON!!!!. Half of the story for me is the ability to play Gordon. It wouldnt be the same playing Alyx.

yeah it must be fake, the whole thing about HL is you are gordon, why the hell would they suddenly break that and let you play Alyx?

Plus...

It kinda looked like Alyx kicked the bucket. And I hope Valve have the integrity to not pull their punches and let her survive.

Anyways, yeh, a HL3 was always on the cards.

So will HL3 be a vivendi game also or is valve going to try going solo this time?

Half Life 3 would never make this coming E3. I expect it to be at E3 2007 and then released some time in 2008. In the meantime, I'm loving HL2 and I think it is the best game ever made.

Alyx didnt die. They already said that they were thinking about expansions including Alyx and DOG.

And i'm on the opposite side as you. Everyone thinks that people should die in a story so as its not like every other story... but now every story has a lead that dies. I think Valve would be smart to leave Alyx in the game. She is a very interesting charectar.

Besides... How the hell could Gordon survive if Alyx dies right beside him during the explosion? If the Gman doesnt teleport them then they both live. If the Gman does teleport them, wich i think is what happened, then he would have teleported Alyx too. The Gman has a penchant for keeping usefull people around. Alyx is a very usefull person.

not to sound too optimistic, but i'd think more about a 2006 E3. they don't have to redo a whole engine, basically only update Source and make HL3 from it. it is conceivable that 2 years could suffice for HL3 to appear.

an interesting question, though, is Source's transition to HL3:
even if it is granted that they're going to upgrade the engine, the question is : will source be upgraded each time a new technology/shader comes out and basically will have up to date technology, meaning that half life 2 will gradually get better and better; or will source will undergo few or no changes regarding HL2, and the upgradability mentioned many times by valve only means "we can reissue one or two another games BASED on source v1" - in the sense that it was only commercial mumbo jumbo

half life revolves around the story of gordon freeman. expansions packs are used to tell the secondary character's stories. they did that with HL1 and it works pretty well, i can't think why they would want to change that.

i herd they was going to make hl3 on the x-box2!
so they can't start making it till x-box2 is ready!

Alyx could easily died in that explosion. The expansions following Alyx and dog are most likely showing what happened before Gordon arrives.

Gordon can survive because the Gman would take him out of there. He could leave Alyx behind if he wants.

how the f**k does that make sense. why would the confirmation of half life 3 be such a disapointment to them.

valve/vivendi: "yeah weve got this great game, its called half life 2...but oh, wait, shit, sorry. weve actually got a half life 3 coming out in a year or two.oh man this sucks, icant beleive this"

gabe newell:"yes half life 3 is in the planning stages. but im so unimpressed with myself for tellig you that just a second ago"

this doesnt make sense and is therefore bullshit. we know there will be a halflife 3 and that they probably have some ideas down on paper but i doubt gabe has just said this like in the lst day or two. its some stupid unknown site trying to get points for having some kind of 'exclusive'.

I believe an expansion will come first anyway. HL3 can only be playable as Gordon. Expansions will probably be much like HL1 expansions, same story, different perspective. I'd like to play again as Barney, as it has been suggested, picking up Gordon early, and then leading the resistance uprising in Gordon's absence. Playing as Alyx might be fun too, she kicks some butt, though I'm not really sure how that would be done.

Meeting up with Gordon and having him not say anything would be pretty weird though. You were in the opposing force in Opposing Force so it made sense that you didn't interact with him and have him say anything.

I believe so too. I hope so - wouldn't want to rush to HL3 without an expansion first. And I think HL3 will be coming in 2-3 years. It took 6 years for HL2 - they had to make a new engine, which probably took one third of their time, and the theft of the source code pushed the release a year forward.

Hl3 is far off so lets just wait for the expansions as of now. See what happens.

Gordon not talking did feel weird to me in HL2, too, somewhat. So he meets his old friends and doesn't say a word? Doesn't say a word to Alyx throughout the entire time they fight together? Hardly. I just assumed that Gordon does say a few words (but really few), and those aren't heard. I can, of course, believe Gordon not talking to the Combine and other enemies, but friends, come on...

Yeah. I think they just heard that and assumed it was hl3 and made up some bs story.

The idea is that YOU talk for gordon. So when im telling the annoying blockers to get the **** out of my way, thats gordon talking, or me, because im supposed to be gordon just like you are. Make sense now? I thought it was a bit stupid before i played the game but not so much now.

Yes, a good perspective. I liked the whole being Gordon thing... and yes I did say thanks to Alyx :).

Still, don't you think that the issue with gordon (not) talking should be enough reason to scrap an expansion where Gordon actually appears?

Suppose it depends on what he does in the expansion. If you only see him for a short time and he doesnt need to talk it doesnt matter, but if hes involved in it a lot without talking it will seem strange.

Well, picture an expansion where you play as Barney. Barney didn't really get to see him that much... you pick up Gordon at train station, next meet him at Kleiner's lab and give him the crowbar, and next time you meet, there are those big fights going on. Certainly seems alright that Gordon won't be talking much as there are hectic fights... and I guess they could also get away with Gordon not talking at the beggining. He's too shocked to speak :p.

I agree that whatever expansion is made, you can't see Gordon too much - like Op For and Blue shift. It just wouldn't work with Gordon there not saying anything, and just acting like a shit AI character.

OMG! Yes!

(just after nova prospect spoiler)
That week when gordon and alyx 'don't exist' after teleporting from nova prospect - you could be Barney during that time! Leading the initial start of the resistance.

Or of course you could be Sheperd doing a completely different missions, catching a glimse of Gordon, maybe running into barney and Alyx along the way.

Man whatever Valve do, it's gonna kick ass!

Yeah, my idea would be to mostly play as Barney during that timeframe you refer to in the spoiler tags... but I'd love to see a bit of Gordon, still. Not just a short glimpse, but him actually doing something.

Then again, when would the game end for Barney's expansion? How about this (ENDING SPOILERS).

The Citadel is blown and starts falling apart... you and everyone else near run away as rubble falls down... and there is one big final fight as many combines rush to the site. You and the resistance members take out the last of elite combine soldiers in City 17, thus effectively putting an end to their domination of the city.

ALAN SHEPARD PEOPLE!!
Would be perfect ^_^
According to Planet HL2, (they havn't updated there mini faq in like 6-12 months) HL2 expansion was already being worked on.
And at that time they already planed HL3..
So im pretty sure they would have got to the planning stages in that amount of time..

What they should do is have alot of big battles with you as Alan Shephard in a diffrent city.

I'd say Alan Shephard would be the best possibile decision without ruining anything.

I seriously doubt that has any truth to it. Mainly because saynig that alyx is playable. valve im sure would NEVER have halflife3 be in anyones eyes besides gordon's. For an expansion pack, I could believe playing as alyx, as for halflife3. No.

When this expansion pack comes, will we be having to buy it?
And i think that in the last game og HL at the very last moment, just before u complete it, u will hear one sentence from gordon!
Some kind of cool catchphrase...
LOLz

*20 seconds til HL? is completed*
G-man:Well Mr.Freeman... Seems u saved the world again! Now go live a long life with that foxy lady of ur'z!
*BOOOOOOM!!!!!*
Gordon: Here we go again!
*Credits*

Duh'!
