Which are you hoping it will be?

I know it's meant to be Episode Three but the episodic thing didn't really work out & many people are speculating that this means Half-Life 3 is coming & blah blah blah.

Which are you actually hoping for?

Quite frankly I'm hoping for a warp jump to Half Life 5 Episode 5

Given how VALVe are prone to start a big project, and when it's almost done, scrap everything and start over with an even more ambitious one (that's what happened with the original Half life, Half life 2 and Team Fortress 2), I wouldn't be surprised if in two years from now, they came up with an Half life 3 game that's the same of a real game, not an expansion/episode.

Seriously, a 50th thread on the subject was not needed.

There will not be a Half-Life 3 before Episode Three is developed.

Because I sent an email to Gabe three odd weeks ago, at a time when these rumors had become widespread.

I asked if a Half-Life 3 was in the works, and if it were to replace Episode Three. Gabe replied with a very simple 'No'. I shared this information on the Steam Forums.

I wish I could provide you with a picture but I have since emptied my inbox. You will have to take my word on it.

I assure you, that is what was said.

It would be stupid for them to release HL3 before EP3. The fans would be outraged, their sales would suffer (maybe) and more importantly the Valve name would be tarnished, and it would never be forgotten.

Equally, theyre unlikely to change the name of EP3 to HL3.

Doubt we'll see it this year..aha, this is insane. What the hell are they doing at Valve.

And when it does come out, because theyve spent so long delaying it or not giving any hints at whats been made so far, the source engine will be so obsolete and outdated that the engine will be a huge negative on review scores and will be left wide open to critics.

They MUST be creating a new engine for EP3. EP2 looks dated these days, kind of, and that was a few years back for god sake.

New engine for sure. Look at L4D2. Bet they were waiting for that to come out, see how the sales did; if it did well (which it did) theyll probably use that new engine.

Of course it's going to be EP3.

If I'm wrong, Uriel shall eat his hat.

"Half life 2 is coming out september 30".

Always take what VALVe says with some degree of critical thought.

Kinda like delaying Half life 2's release 4 days before the planned date? Or delaying Team Fortress 2 for, what? 7 years? Or coming out with a sequel to Left4Dead after one year? I can see how that tarnished the VALVe name and hurt their sales... (That's sarcasm by the way.)

Also, the fans would be outraged, really? After all those years, you'd rather get an episode than a full game? It does not compute...

Equally, theyre unlikely to change the name of EP3 to HL3.

Well after all this time, if it's a full fledged game, the name Hl3 would make more sense (plus, episodic shouldn't be every 3 years, so in that sense it's the "episode" name that should be dropped).
Given VALVe's track record, I wouldn't be surprised if Ep3 became Hl3. Not that I'm positive it's gonna happen. But it might. I have a "gut feeling" that says 50%/50% either way.

This is pointless. Valve said there will be three episodes. There will be three episodes. Period. Anyway, what's all this "I want HL3" thing? You like high numbers? What's it gonna change if the name is different? It's not going to magically make the game 40+ hours long.

This is pointless. Valve said there will be three episodes. There will be three episodes.

You've been here since 2003 and you take everything they(VALVe) say for granted?

I've been here since much earlier. And yes, I've been here and there long enough to know it will be Episode Three. Not Half-Life 3. Just like there was Team Fortress 2 and not something called Funny Colorful Deathmatch.

So HL2 - HL2: EP1 - HL2: EP2 then HL3...huh nope. It's going to be Episode 3, no matter what.

Just caught an article about this and found this. It wouldn't make sense to create an entire game before an episode as the episode is meant to be a continuation of the storyline, the one we left at the end of episode 2. HL3, which I am pretty confident will be created (hopefully within our life times if we're lucky) would start again from something completely different, and new, as HL2 was from HL.

I think as someone said, there is a massive delay on it because they are upgrading the source engine, or even going as far as making a completely new one as it is getting outdated now, now matter how revolutionary it was/is. This of course would deplete the time needed to create HL3 has a huge chunk of the waiting time of HL2 was because they got so far and then decided to create the Source engine from scratch.

We haven't had anything on EP3 simply because, I don't think have anything worth sharing with us at the moment, I think the game itself will still be early day not with the Left 4 Dead games that have had a lot of their attention.

I think it will be EP3, too. My biggest question is what they will call the episode after. HL3 or HL4? The episodes pretty much constitutes Half-Life 3, so it would be silly to call whatever follows HL3.

Except they're called "Half-Life 2 Episode X"

So no it wouldn't be silly.

Well I'm pretty sure Valve said that the episodes weren't half life 3 and didn't want people getting confused.

No matter how much i hate the wait i've been a fan of the HL series since i played HL in 98. I'll be happy with whatever they put out when it actually does come out. And i've read that episode 3 isnt the end of gordan freeman, so that does indicate that it will be an episode and not just HL3.

This is what Gabe actually said about the naming:

Eurogamer said:
Eurogamer: Why did you change the name from Aftermath? We liked the name.

Gabe Newell: Errr... I... I think that Aftermath was almost a temporary name. I always thought of it as Episodes One through Three because that's how we planned the products out. I think people thought we'd need a name for them, and Aftermath ended up being more confusing than helpful.

Probably a better name for it would have been Half Life 3: Episode One, but these three are what we're doing as our way of taking the next step forward, but Half-Life 2 was the name we used.

No, we won't "take your word on it." Give us a link to this "information" you shared on the Steam Forums then.

The new info regarding Portal 2 had me thinking: what if Episode 3 remains Episode 3 (see: not HL3) but isn't much of an episode at all? Instead, what if Valve decided to make it almost the same length as HL2 and price it the same? Seems a bit more plausible than just moving over to Half-Life 3.

It would most definitely explain the length of development. Not to mention, it's supposedly the conclusive chapter of the HL2 storyline. Valve would want to make it something that would really satisfy players. Maybe they've decided the 5-6 hour playing time doesn't meet their goals.

my bets is full half life 3 game now :/ sad thing is could be waiting till this time next year for news now once portal 2 release has come and gone, seems to me valve consentrate on 1 game a year now
