Half-life engine vs Far Cry engine?

And before you respond with "oh great, another X vs Y thread", I'm not making any assertions here, and I'm NOT asking which game has better graphics, I'm just curious regarding what everyone thinks about how Half-life 2 will run compared to how Far Cry ran. Far Cry is probably the first solid next-gen FPS, and should be the graphical benchmark for future FPS games, but Half-life 2 has been in development for a good 6 years. I think we'll need more benchmarks from Valve to be certain, but from the information we have now, which will run better, Half-life 2 or Far Cry?

I think HL2 will run better, Far Cry is an unoptimized POS.

HL2 is prolly the only next-gen game that can give you bearable framerates on something even like a voodoo 3 at low settings.

HL2 without a doubt will run better. It's better optimized (well, I can't say this for sure, but it better be), plus, the game doesn't look anywhere near as graphically demanding

HL2 is more scalable so the lower the System specs the more the performance will stand out compared to FarCry.
If HL2 turns out to be less memory demanding than Farcry then it will run a lot better or more consistant on a system with 512MB.

I agree. I wasn't saying HL2 looks bad, it looks just about perfect IMO. FC looks overdone

You do know the FarCry engine was made with pirated software right? So if you also look @ FarCry the game, seeing how many issues it has, guess whats probably wrong with the engine

No, they weren't using pirated software. There was a raid (or 2?), but there were no charges against them AFAIK. You don't know the whole story, none of us actually do.

You took the words out of my mouth, although I don't think it's a POS. It lacks optimizations, that's why even the X800 XT and the 6800 Ultra can only run it at abou 45 FPS at 12x10 with only 2AA and 8AF. That's running slower than the D3 engine, and the D3 engine looks even better. Also, I got those numbers above from [H]ardOCP.com.

According to its screenshots, HL2 is, by far, better looking than Far Cry.

yeah, plus FarCry used a new Crytek engine which was new, so HL2 engine will run much better

I think Far cry's screenshots are loads better. At least Crytek shows screens at high res with AA and AF. Valve for some reason likes to show us bad screens, but good videos.
