when i bought half life years ago i installed in onto my c:/ drive and since ive had steam ive been running it through that. in the steam folder theres all the files need to play half life and mods etc. my question is, is it safe to delete the origional install of half life i did like 5 years ago from my c:/ drive? as everything seems to be in duplicate in my steam folder.

No, you have to keep it or reinstall it for it to work.

oh right. its just that in add remove programs it says the last time half life was used was july 2003or something like that. could i not remove half life with add remove programs and then type in the cd keys to register it with steam again ifit stopped working, and so get any downloads it needed to make the game work in steam, rather then me having 2 copies of effectivelythe same game on my machine?

What are you talking about? :|

Of course you can delete your old installation, it's perfectly safe. As long as you have all of your games and mods in Steam, you'll be fine. I'm not sure where Hazar pulled that one from.

yeah thats what i thought, i mean the version installed years ago is just sitting there in my games folder on the c:/ drive and im always playing half life through steam. if it does screw up ive got my hl adn opposing force cd keys so i can just registerthem again in my account in the 'register games i already own' section.

cheers

I suppose if you install it through steam then yes. I guess I always install it first and then register it.

Whether you downloaded it or installed it from CD, all the neccessary files will be in your SteamApps folder. There's no need for an old installation to be sitting on your HDD doing nothing.

Hmmm, perhaps.

My regular Half-Life folder has stuff in it that the steam one doesn't. I'm keeping mine just in case.

No, not perhaps, I'm deadly serious. :) The only real reason to keep your old installation is to play LAN games on mods that don't work on Steam. If you still have the original HL installation, you effectively have two copies of the same game on your HDD, except with one you can't update it nor can you play online (thanks to WON being shut down).

yeah ive just deleted the whole thing. add removed half life and opposing force from the games directory on the c:/ drive, and then went back to delete the actual files left in the folder that the addremove procedure didnt get rid of (i dont know why it leaves the folder after you do that though. it shouldnt - its just window's backwards way of doings things. if you just straight up delete the file you gets loads ofstuff left in the registery, and if yuo use add remove progras you ahve to go back and delete the folder manually as well to get rid of the last bits).

half life still works through steam, as does everything else. its safe to do hazar

(and i saved myself a few gigs of HDD space too...bonus  )

Has anyone used the High Definition pack in Steam? I can't get mine to work.

/me is still cautious.
I've got all my hammer stuff set up and I think it will screw it up 'cause they'res some stuff in there.

I've got enough room. I'll play it safe. :)

Thanks for the 'persuasion' though. I'll do it differently next time :)

it won't work until valve adds the cabablity to steam, which won't happen until half-life 2's release, at the very earliest.

I think it's best to post this here, rather then to create a new thread.

I got a Half-life Generation pack yesterday, sealed and everything. But when I try to register my HL key through steam, it says the key is allready in use...

It didn't look tampered with...

Then it's just been randomly guessed by someone. It's very rare.

Phone Vivendi and you'll get a new key.

I've got it in a zip if anyone want it. It works fine.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. I felt so sorry for him that I gave him one of my keys. If you call Vivendi they will probably help you, if you can prove that you own the game.
