in the cd version, the files are located in the *.pak files in your ....uhm....valve dir.
You can open them with a normal unzip program or the model viewer.

download - start - "file" - "open pak file..." - browse your hl dir

On a side note, you can make some pretty funny wavs by combining those sounds, like the vox and grunt sounds.

Hours of fun!

How do they make the noises? some are recorded from real thiings, like gunfire etc, but what about strange sounds such as aliens speaking or something... ive always wondered wether they get some voice-actor in to do it or completly synthesize it on a computer. Anyone know for sure?

You can do such things with GoldWave for example.
