Well you have it! Is it? At least I think so. But soon HL2 will kick all games butts. But is it the best best game yet? :bounce:

Well from what I have seen of the videos it looks better than any other game I have seen gameplay wise. It looks truly exciting in some places, and deep and thoughtful and brooding in others.

It's going to be awesome unless they rewrite it completely and turn it into a platform game featuring Weeble & BoB.
 
I'm going out on a limb here and informing everyone that I've never played Half-Life before. Only knew of Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Until the past few days when I finally decided it would be best to play Half-Life before playing HL2. However, I've always heard HL was the best game of all time. It won hundreds of awards and was praised for immersive storytelling. I didn't see it. Does someone want to explain to me why they thought HL was such an amazing game? Hardly any questions I had about the circumstances I was taking part in were answered. Granted, the gameplay experience was pretty exceptional for it's time, I really found myself getting bored of similar puzzles after awhile. Especially in the later Zen levels. Everytime I turned around there was some sort of platform jumping puzzle. Anyone care to elaborate on the story of HL for anything I might have missed?

I am speachless, i don't know why you don't like it. I bought the game this year and loved it (HL:OF and HL:Blue shift too)

the xen levels did kind of suck, but its still my favorite game of all time. Well, FPS game i mean.
 
The Xen levels didn't suck in my opinion, they were just too different.
 
Well Half-Life is my favorite game of all time. Best game? I don't know - can't really say. Looking at it from the perspective of the sheer number of awards it's gotten then yes, it probably is. But again, you can't really measure a game by the amount of awards it's gotten.
 
Deus Ex + Half-life = Best FPS

Then there's other genres...

The Xen levels were the best, it's what made the game even better, god, i need more xen goodness, gonna go play the xen levels now...
 
I think you would need more scope to claim HL1 or 2 to be the best game ever. I have played a ton of games across all platforms from console, PC, Arcade, Phones, Pda's & cheapo plastic LCD games.

That's about 14 years worth of gaming experience. Half the people who play PC games today seem to have just started. I would like to know how many you have played?

There are no bests. Just good times. Although I have to say playing goldeneye on the N64 with 3 other friends was pretty damn cool at the time.

I think halo caught the same vibe for the younger generation.
 
deus ex comes pretty high on my list, not the new one though obviously!

the coolness of that game only really comes apparent when you compare your experience with someone else or play it again.
in one bit your brother is incapacitated and robots are knocking at the door, he tells you to leave out the back so i did, but my friend played it and fought them saving his brother and changing the storyline completely. that really is an RPG, much more than say Diablo

hl rocks though :)

the debate needs to be qualified, do you mean what should a new player play now (assuming basic skills)
or which game had the greatest effect/improvement on release?
you could even do it entertainment concentration/longevity/ value
hl is high on all of these mind you :)
 
Yup, agree completely. Deus Ex is an incredible game and def up there with half life. But even tho the two are FPS, there are also very very different. Deus Ex is very much more RPG with all the character development mechanics, and I think it's more innovative than HL in terms of non-linear game play. Completed DX 4 times and HL twice. Both rule and HL2 will rule more!!
 
I only played the begining and that was the best game i ever played.
 
Half life is a pretty average fps, at the time it was decent, but the third party mods for the game are amazing (Natural Selection and The Specialists to name a few)
 
Who ever played HL in 1998 will agree that it was the best game of all time :D...which i still think it is
People who play Doom3 then HL wont think HL was a great game
 
I would say Half-Life is one of the best FPS's so far, but not the best game of all time. There are loads of other games that ive played and enjoyed heaps more than Half-Life.
 
I've played a lot of good games but none come close to what I got from playing HL/Op4 and DX. Awesome, awesome experience, I hope that DX3 isn't as...erm "simplified" as DX2 was.
 
It would have to be the best game I have ever played, my other top games include Deus Ex, GTA3/VC and even now Far Cry and Doom 3. Half Life still gets that number 1 spot from me though.
 
I played HL and didn't really enjoy it .. I thought it was scary ;( and I'm a phobic person so I can't enjoy scary stuff, I was actually afraid of playing it sometimes (yeah .. go ahead and laugh) but I wanted to finish it so that I may discover the secret for the hype.

The only thing I could come up with is that it was the best thing at its time, most games probably sucked hard back then.

I'm replaying it now .. and still can't enjoy it .. at least not as much as the avarage hl-fan enjoys it. :/
 
i played the first while of it ... everything looked the same and it was pretty boring after a while ... repetitive ... wasnt too great ... but half life 2 should be different ... :sniper: :sniper: :sniper: :sniper: shoudl i really play half life all the way through?

You should play HL so you have a better understanding of HL2. It could get confusing. :cheers:

Pokemon was fun but boring, repeatative and silly now... i went through a pokemon phase as a 12 year old :)
Half-life still hasn't lost its spark to me, every so often i still want to play through the first few levels to pass some time... no other game has that appeal to me, other than Dues Ex :D
