Played half life played half life 2 on PC and xbox now coming to 360 next week (19th Oct)

But can some one tell me the history behind the logo how it was created what does it mean?

Welcome to the forums, rcwadsworth.

The Half-Life symbol is a lowercase lambda, the 11th letter of the Greek alphabet. In science, the lambda represents the radioactive decay constant, which is the exponential decay of radioactive materials. The lambda represents the half-life of decay--that is, the amount of time it takes for a radioactive isotope to decay to one half of its value.

You copied that from somewhere, didn't you?

And welcome to the forums!

Hey its also a length of wave

As Darkside said, Half-life is a scientific term which indicates the time it takes for a radioactive isotope to half in radioactivity. Which is where the Scientific names in the series come from. (Opposing force and Blueshift also both being scientific terms too)

The lambda is basically just a scientific symbol (stolen from the Greek alphabet) adopted in the HL games, which has just become synonymous with the series now, so much so it's used in the title for the game. As seen here, but the lambda actually means 'L' so "H L L F L I F E" is what we are looking at really.

... are you geniuses...? also its used as the resistance symbol or shows the supply caches, but everyone knows that... :dork:

It's also the symbol for the Lambda Complex, which, you may recall, was the main teleportation laboratory in Black Mesa. It also appears on the Hazardous Environment suit mark IV and V. Possibly the HEV suit was developed at the Lambda Complex. The Combine-resistance movement has taken the Lambda as their symbol, either in reference to the labs, or to the lambda that Gordon so famously wears on his chest.

probably the latter in that case

I think Valve should make t-shirts that just have the simple lambda in circle design on them (rather than the whole HL2 logo with the name of the game written underneath). It's just such a great emblem for the HL mythos and lambda/circle alone would be far cooler than what their putting out now.

They did make one like that. Came with the collector's edition HL2 box.

IIRC you could choose what size you got when you ordered Gold, because mine is definitely not XL (it's L I think).
