Halflife 2--Offline Problems

I know that there is a possibility of playing Halflife 2 offline---I've done it. The problem is, hwoever, that lately, this doesn't happen. I try to hit "Start in Offline Mode," but as soon as I do, an error comes up complaining about the goddamned connection--halting the entire process.

O...kay... There's a reason why I said "Play Offline", folks--and a connection isn't needed.

So I was curious as to whether or not anyone knew how to fix this.
A couple of things before you open your mouths however; I'm on the campus firewall, which blocks all access to online games. I tried using a tunnel to get out, but it's insufficient. I need to be able to play offline.

to the OP have you tried unplugging your network cable then do offline mode.
