What is your feeling of this?

And, will the preload help in the installation if later I decide to buy it retail?

Well, at the moment I'm impatient, because I have a baseless desire to start preloading as soon as possible even though it won't have any affect at all on how soon I can actually play the game.

Later, I'll probably look through the GCFs, and after that I won't care until much closer to release or whenever Valve releases new information. I'll probably be more eager to follow SiN Episodes, since it's coming out sooner.

As for your second question, buying it online during the preload phase will save you about $2 plus tax and gas money. If you have the game preloaded but not purchased on your account, you should be able to "install" it from the retail distribution just by entering your cd-key into Steam, avoiding actually using the retail disc.

I will thank you a lot if you a correct.

By the way, what is a "PST 10.00 a.m."? That means what time in Hong Kong?

I hate all of you :frown:

But in less than a month I shall have retail goodness. MUAHAHAHAHA

Haha. I'll start the preload even though if I actualy left my interent running from here to when it comes out in shops it probably still wouldn't be done :p

Retail, preload is for pussies who can't wait.

yea im going to buy it retail for sure ... preload is so gay.

Preload is great. We get to play it at midnight and we also save money and a trip to the store. Plus backing up the game is about as good as a retail copy without the box.

I see no point in buying retail. So far I've gotten the best deal by getting online (Silver pack anyone?).

Now for a question, when you buy the CD of HL2, do you need it to install? Or can you download it?

Haven't tried. Haven't seen any need of trying.
Having the CD to install from is faster than needing to download via Steam.
All you need after that is patches.

You can download it.

If I downloaded it, I would not need to install it by the CD (DVD, actually), right?

Right, although it hardly saves you any time.

I am buying Steam for the simple reason that its half the price of retail here in the UK.

Retail: £20
Steam: £10

What? I thought that it takes the same price if I buy it by steam, no matter where I am.

My guess is that preloaders will be able to play HL1 Deathmatch Source as an incentive (though it depends on how good a job they've done with it. I think I heard a rumour that they're giving it a proper overhaul). Plus the retail versions work out unneccessarily expensive for a box you could easily make yourself (especially in the Uk where it'll just be a simple DVD box.)

Yes? The point is that retail varies in price from place to place. Though Dowie is exaggerating as after tax and shopping around:

Retail: £16.99 (Amazon UK)
Steam: Approx £11.50 (incl $3 or so Tax)

edit: Though of course, £5 is still a considerable saving. The privaliege of a little plastic box and a defunct disc, or a couple of Pints next time you're out with friends? Even i'd choose the drinkies.

The preload is not started yet. The current time in Hong Kong is: 10 p.m..
I wonder how staffs in Valve or Steam work, they are slow.

Well, right now I think it's around 10 am in Seattle where Valve are. The preload isn't going to start for a few hours at least. It'll probably be early tomorrow morning for you.

My guess is that only pre-purchasers will be able to play HL1DM Source.

Retail: € 13,00 (gcshop.nl) :p

Well duh.

Believe it or not, but they have to sleep sometimes.

Well there's a big difference between pre-loaders en pre-purchasers.
It isn't so large that you need to be as pedantic as to point it out. Who would honestly believe that I meant that Valve were going to start handing out free games to anyone who made a motion towards buying Episode 1?

Sorry, it wasn’t meant pedantic.

If you preload the game and NOT preorder. When you buy it retail all you do is put in your cd key and the game unlock you dont need to install. So the noobs who DONT preload are the noobs.

Im sure you can have it downloaded by the time the game comes out.

I got that price from play.com, but anyway. :(

Its still a large saving.

And I still think people who preorder via Steam are nothing but impatient.

Owning the CD makes it feel a more concrete evidence that you own the game. Just the fact that some server online has it regietered that you are legimate to play it feels less reasuring that you in fact own the game.

I actually perfer not having the packaging. It just ends up as clutter. Unless there's actually some printed fiction or really cool stuff, but the trend is just a manual, and even those are getting shorter.

I definately don't feel any more or less secure in my ownership of a game I got online than a game I bought at the store but need online verification. It's just two different paths to get the same program on your Steam account. Online happens to be a little cheaper and lets you browse GCFs for a month.

Im preordering so i can play the sec it comes out and im buying the box for that very reason so its part of my "collection"

Half-Life 2 preload? I already got the whole game.

When talking about Episode 1, that's a different story.

EA Games ain't getting one cent from me. Preload and purchase on Steam, baby!

So wait... if I prelooad... I will get half life 1 death match: source? Will I get that if I pre purchase too?

That's only speculation. In the past Steam releases have offered such incentives to pre-purchasers. People who pre-purchased HL2 via Steam got to play CS:Source. People who do the same with Sin: Episodes get Sin 1 to play. It all depends whether HL1DM:S is ready already.

Whoops, I'm on 72.4% in preload. Started at 69%. Lalalala, happy day.

+18bucks to valve.

.bog.

So want to pre load but credit payment playing up. This what makes online purchasing a bit of a pain. >_<

And this is why there is that handy backup feature in steam. For those with dvd burners like myself, steam becomes the only way to go. Same as a box disc, get to play it early, get some money off. Win!
