OFFICAL FROM VALVE Halflife2 hardware survey!

There will be a number of significant Steam events in the coming days.

The first will be a long-awaited Steam client release. The highlights from this release will be:

Offline Play
Account validation (via e-mail)
A new Half-Life 2 hardware survey
Support for purchasing games through Steam

There are a number of other small changes along with the ones listed above, as well as a number of changes planned out past the launch of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.

Taken from Steam news page :)

Any comments?

A hardware survey....

Why? Is it a sign that HL2 is coming. Or that it is not coming for a while.

Discuss :)

Heheh, a reply at last.

And yeah, its the biggest change to steam so far I think.
The hardware survey is an interesting development to say the least :)

Interesting indeed!
What could it mean exactly? Will Steam gather info about your system specs or something?

Also interesting they're finally doing something with that email address that makes up your account.

Heheh, they are all very intesting. I mean support for buying games through steam is very important.

We might be able to put down money for HL2 before we can download it purhaps?

Maybe buy CS CZ or whatever. Maybe halflife itself. I mean you would just be purchasing a CD Key after all.

Offline play is a major step :)

And account validation is very important.

Also it says:
"There will be a number of significant Steam events in the coming days.

That means that there will be more significant updates :D

Maybe high res videos!! Anyone know where I can download the high res videos, half the link on IGN don't work.

Ohhhh! Do you think the coder that Valve picked up helped them with the updates? perhaps even did them? What was his name? can't remember

Anywho, I think when it analizes your computer hardware, I think it will tell you everything that you will want to know about how Half Life 2 will run on your computer. Perhaps it will even get as detailed to say what your average FPS will be at a given resolution, partical details, and other goodies!

Can't wait for em!

Noboday said it would analyze our PCs btw. Its a survey. That could mean anything.

Just want to get that accross because people are allways saying steam is spyware and it searches your PC for stuff lol. Don't want to start a rumour here. :p

Anyway, maybe the benchmark will be out soonish. And the SDK might be out in one of these significant updates in the next few days :)

We can hope eh!? :D

Or it has nothing to do with HL2....
Thanks for the link marksman.

hey good idea, marksman. that wouuld be a really smart move by valve i think, for everyone to save up some money to upgrade a little, if they know before hand how the game will run

/me crosses fingers

i hope that's what the survey is, and NOT something valve uses to modify source(although i doubt they'd do that... i hope...).

edit: btw it said "hl2 hardware survey" so it MUSt be about hl2 :p

what the hell, marksman you changed your post. anyways, what i meant above, for his ORIGINAL post, was if the survey was to see what hardware you had and it could tell you about how the game will run(like a benchmark but text info)

Oh, I just noticed this on another forum for CS and damn, I hope it's that hardware analyse stuff!

Interesting. Maybe some sort of benchmark. THE BENCHMARK! This might be it. And offline play? Excuse my n00bishness, but what is that?

wow just any HL2 stuff is gunna be great even if it just checks yours specs its a sign of life at valve

Currently you have to be connected to the internet to play singleplayer and offline multiplayer (e.g. LAN). As promised many months ago, Valve are now ensuring that you are able to play without a connection.

Looks like it. I want to know what all the other updates are going to be. Sounds like we will be getting a bit more than just these few things.

im excited by the prospects of even more stuff after the release of CZ.

Hey, If anyone gets CZ and there IS more HL2 stuff. Please take some screenshots and post em as quick as a...as quick as a bunny!

I certainly hope I don't have to be connected to the interent to play single player HL2. It costs us 25c for four hours, and we're on dialup, so we can't call anyone while we're online...

hehe, yeah welcome to the world of Telstra.

Hopefully these releases will be done progressively over a certain amount of time.. i don't want to have to wait and try to get around those dodgy update traffic bugs when i'm trying to play a clan match

ye. btw everyone. Before somone says. This is offical information and is true. It just shows that its getting closer :D

just got a response from erik johnson re: the hardware survey.

in the valve info thread.

cheers

Yes, I saw that. Maybe those "decisions" are about whether or not to include things like the high-res textures, etc, eh?

lets hope decisions arent made which take a lot of time to implement

I hope they're the "Okay, we're going to release soon, what should the final build have?"-type decisions...

Sounds like they're rebuilding the entire graphics engine...
j/k

An intersting post in relation to this news found at: http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=47307

Not necessarily my views, but this was all news to me and makes for interesting reading and speculation

First,
An important difference between the original Half Life and HL over Steam, including modifications such as Counter-Strike, is that, read agreement:

SOFTWARE LICENSE
Steam and your Subscription(s) require the installation of the Steam client and the automatic download of software, other content and updates thereto onto your computer ("Steam Software"). You may not use Steam Software for any purpose other than the permitted access to Steam and your Subscriptions. You understand that Steam may automatically update, pre-load, create new versions or otherwise enhance the Steam Software and accordingly, the system requirements to use the Steam Software may change over time.
So thereby steam can update, ‘enhance’, or install new versions of itself or any application it may deem necessary to run.
In other words, it will install or update on your computer anything it wants without asking you.
So the reason I trusted HL was because it was bound by it’s original EULA that did not allow any of the previous. Steam does and therefore I simply cannot trust it.

Valve was hacked once, it can be hacked again, but what if next time it’s hacked the hackers don’t just steal some unfinished source, but instead reprogram steam to automatically install every subscriber with a virus!
The virus could simply allow backdoor access to your system, or maybe it will reformat your hard drive. And you know if it does happen, there is nobody you can run to for help, your on your own, your screwed, there is nobody to sue, Valve does not even have an incentive to provide acceptable security measures, after all they can’t be held liable for anything.

See when I buy a new car and I have to sign something that says “The manufacturer of the vehicle can not be held liable for any damages to you or others through the use of this vehicle.” Then I think… yea sounds ok.

But if the paragraph above it reads “The manufacturer of this vehicle reserved the right to remotely take control of the vehicles steering at any time it deems necessary. The purpose of such action may include testing the practical performance of certain safety measures on human occupants” then are you still thinking its all good and alright?

Steam comes with a build in updater that has the power to not just update but to install any component it want to, and if that is a virus because Valve has been hacked once again, well then it’s a virus, and valve can not be held liable. That’s why it’s no ok.

But whatever, go use steam, be happy with it while you can, just remember, when you get screwed there is nobody you can run and cry to.

Second:
Steam IS a DRM client!
Its entire purpose is to provide a secure platform for subscription based distribution of selected products.

Subscriptions need to be enforced, that means if you pay for a subscription of HalfLife2 then it needs to be validated, the validation information is cashed but valid only for a limited time (3 days), and thereby allowing offline play of singe player content without the need to be online, and this validation can be achieved via the use of email.

After a certain time (3 days) however the cached validation becomes invalid and needs to be renewed. If you are online you will not even notice this, if you are offline however you have to revalidate over email.
This means that if you bought HL2 over Steam you need to be online to play it, even in single player, or you will need to validate it via email at certain intervals (3 days
The same pertains to future offline LAN games, validation will be required and will be valid for only a limited time.

Againm have fun, let's just hope your internet will always work and Valve never goes offline to provide you with current validation...
