This week, we've been lucky enough for the Ninja Workshop team to have given us access to their new closed beta build of their mod Berimbau.
Berimbau is a multiplayer Source engine mod featuring fierce sword duels in a retro-future universe. The game features an open sword combat system that allows for creative use of combos, counter-attacks, and parries. This combat system encourages players to develop attack patterns and strategies to defeat their opponents, rather than random ?knife-fight? melee combat.

Playing together over the past few days has been great to see a mod in it's relative infancy as it's core features are put into place. This mod offers a unique experience, whereby you must co-ordinate strings of attacks, as well as blocks & parries. Dodging and stance changes are all important, and this will be a mod to look out for in the future. Duels can be fast and frantic or controlled and methodical, multi duels will add to the chaos once introduced.[br]Keep up to date with the ninjaworkshop team on their website, and I'm sure they will be looking for support in the ModDB MOTY competition if this looks up your street!

Heard first about this mod from Podcast 17. Sounded very interesting.

sounds like it's worth a go. The level lighting needs a bit more work though, too much of the same tone over everything.

Looks like a fun mod, it's a bit difficult to recognise which moves are being pulled off though. It needs some colour variation or some leading animations to make the moves more readable. (E.g. around the 60s mark, the finishing move kills him before you can even see what move it is.) If you can't tell what move someone's about to do it's going to make the parry system very trial-and-error.

Even fast-paced fighters like Street Fighter have a very brief moment where the beginning of an attack animation plays but no damage is dealt, to give you time to parry/dodge/jump/counter/break.
